REFEREES — can’t live with them, can’t do without them.

There is no doubt that the men in black — or dodgy yellow or green nowadays — have become the centre of attention more than ever.

TV coverage means there is more scrutiny of every decision than ever — but are there more mistakes?

CELTIC — who play HIBS on Sunday — have had the benefit of some shockers in recent weeks. The chalked-off equaliser for ABERDEEN was especially baffling.

But it was RANGERS who got the benefit against DUNDEE UNITED. And didn’t Craig Levein, below, show his emotions.

Forum

We all call for managers to show they care. The United boss was almost in tears after his side were denied a stonewall penalty and had a perfectly good goal disallowed by ref Mike McCurry.

Levein raged: “We had a blatant penalty and he bottled it. If it’s not a level playing field and, if we don’t get the decisions, blatant, important decisions then what is the point of turning up?”

He added: “I thought Mike McCurry had the balls to stand up and give these decisions, but he bottled it.

“Not only is it a penalty kick, but it’s a sending off for Davie Weir. But he didn’t want to do it because this game meant so much to Rangers.”

Levein will no doubt face a rap from the beaks — but was he right?

If you were at the game tell us how you saw the controversial incidents. Do the Old Firm get the benefit of the decisions? Do refs bottle the big games?

Or do they make fewer mistakes than the players, but they are under the spotlight more. Let us know what you think by clicking on the link below.

Of the goals that counted, Nacho Novo grabbed a double and Jean-Claude Darcheville a third as Rangers won 3-1. Mark De Vries headed one back for United.

The result moves Walter Smith’s side just a point behind Celtic with a game in hand. Who will win the title? Let us know.

The defeat also put a severe dent in United’s hopes of finishing in third and grabbing a UEFA Cup place — especially after MOTHERWELL beat Aberdeen 2-1. Darren Smith and Chris Porter did the damage for Mark McGhee’s side while Sone Aluko smashed a late contender for goal of the season.

What are the other wonder goals you’ve seen this year? Let us know your favourites.

KILMARNOCK beat HEARTS 2-0 at Tynecastle — Grant Murray and sub Paul Di Giacomo got on the scoresheet. How good was the game? Tell us what the highlights were. Were there any youngsters given a chance who might shine next season? Tell us who.

Carl Finnigan joined Michael Higdon on the scoresheet as FALKIRK beat INVERNESS 2-1. Barry Wilson slotted a late consolation penalty for Caley. How well can these teams do next season? Let us know.

GRETNA managed a bore draw with ST MIRREN — with neither team mangaing to create much excitement for the fans. If you were at the game we want to know what YOU think.

Rangers need'nt worry about saints in the run in if enything it will a ideal oppurtunity for gers to improve there goal difference there was more quality on show at the kids half time kick about.no need to guess who the whipping boys will be next year

This an open letter to Gerry Mcnee

Gerry
For the first time i have just read the New Of The World and indeed your column.
Normally i do not bother with downmarket tabloids but it had been left in stall 3 of the main toilet area in work where i went for my morning constitution minus my normal read, i have just finished laughing and thought i just had to drop you a little note about some points in your column.
First of all i would like to apologies in case i drone on you indicate in the second paragraph you do not like this although after reading what you had to say "pot" and "kettle" spring to mind. Also i ask that you bear with me as i am not like you a "professional" (snigger) but i will try hard for this letter to be smart mouthed.
Gerry you have had a fair old go at Walter Smith, can i ask you what manager would not ask for any advantage going heading into a big game? is it not his job to get results by whatever way he sees fit? you talk about him whinging, then later in the column you attack his tactics and motives.
As for his "negative" tactics against Dundee or anyone else you mention, who was the victor? now i am just a supporter and we like to win so maybe you could contact Walter with some advice on proper management, be sure to tell him the stuff that took you to the top of the management tree, you know the stuff that won you loads of trophies? thanks.
Now motive, he left the scotland job. Big Deal. i can see why someone like yourself doubts its for anything other than money but i think Walter was pretty well off by the time he came back to Rangers and ego? he was very successful first time round. obviously lets not count Europe cause no one in Scotland was achieving anything there. But forget all that you (and now me) know the real reason he is back.
At this point if i can offer an opinion i would like to say that if i was a Rangers manager with the experience Walter has i would withdraw my players from meaningless friendless also.
Now David Murray, First of all as a football "journalist" (snigger) lets stick to football, why bring up Burma? a terrible thing happened there what is it to do with football? to me it seems like a cowardly personal attack but i could be wrong. David is very rich and i don't have any idea how much he pledged if any of his cash but i would say it must have been less than the millions you must have sent, obviously to have a go at other people you only get that right when you made sizeable donations yourself. obviously

Gerry i could go on but i don't want to bore you. I certainly don't want accused of spouting verbal diarrhoea( you seem like an expert)
I have been informed that every week your column is full of this same "top class reporting" (snigger) i am also told you are forever breaking exclusives and "telling it here first" so i am sorry next week is your last week if you had been righting on for the foreseeable future i would have looked forward to missing your bile.
Please allow me to finish this little note with two questions, I would hope you have the balls to answer them but we both no you will not.

If indeed i have been told correctly that you have been doing this "good work" (snigger) for years why did you get fired from the radio clyde football phone in? some say you couldn't hack it but i don't believe that cause you seem really smart (snigger) so you tell me?

Are the popular opinions wrong, have we all made a mistake? Are you a very clever man way before his time, are we mere mortals forever in your debt for pointing out clever stuff us dummies would not have seen. will when the human brain evolves to use its full potential will people look back and call you a visionary, will they say Gerry Mcnee was right all along?
or are you just another old blowhard who makes a living with small minded criticisms and theory's, not in a live debate but from the security of an office, a man who is so bitter and jealous he has now forgotten why he started supporting Celtic in the first place (thats right its obvious) someone who everyone i have asked this morning said the same thing, Gerry Mcnee he's an ......... al not say.
I have formed my oppinion.

Enjoy your retirment Ger, and the uefa cup final. all the best for the future.

Ps. if you reply i would be willing to tell you what everyone thinks of you.

Best Regards
Andrew Dick (average fan)

Whilst over the year I enjoyed reading Gerry’s McNee's comments and the plight of football, Scottish in particular. However in his penultimate column yet again takes the morale high ground by advising David Murray to take a position Scottish Football Administration if he is not satisfied with the current set-up. Gerry has so much to say about how football could be improved and now that he is leaving this job perhaps he should take up the post himself, after all he has such a wealth of knowledge and illustrious contacts with “his old chum” Sepp Blether he could turn the whole game round before ball is kicked in the new season. I doubt it, as he would then be in position off responsibility and open to question. Not the same as sitting on the fence criticising without reproach.
Gerry, Enjoy your retirement, as I think your record is stuck on same old tosh you keep regurgitating.
You could learn from your younger colleague Davie Provan, when criticising at least offer some constructive opinion.

FAO Gerry McNee

If anything has become “wearisome” in Scottish football then surely it is your constant droning about the evils of the Old Firm. Had any other columnist written such drivel 3 days prior to Rangers appearing in the UEFA Cup final I would probably have choked on my Frosties but I have now come to expect this kind of nonsense from you. I’m sure I’m not the only fan who is more than a little bored of you shrouding your lack of actual football knowledge by bringing politics into your column.

Rangers are in the process of playing four games in an eight day period; double the normal and acceptable game load in such a timeframe. Any club in the world would have something to say about this. FACT. Yet you seem utterly appalled that Rangers dare to ask for help then speak out when they don’t get it.

It simply baffles me that you felt the need to bring a natural disaster into the mix in order to make Sir David Murray look bad. By the logic in your column no-one is ever entitled to complain about anything ever because there will always be someone, somewhere, who is suffering an ill 1,000,000 times more devastating. “That ref was shocking on Saturday.”
“Aye, but there’s weans starving in Africa so pipe doon.” We are all aware of the tragedies in the world but this is a matter of football and by using this style of argument you simply kill any debate.

I find the criticism Rangers have received about their style of play fascinating. When Walter took over at Ibrox his objective was simply to stop the rot, make Rangers a hard team to beat and challenge Celtic for the SPL title. He did this by bringing together a squad of players who play the game with passion, grit and determination and work hard for the team. I would love to see Rangers pass European teams off the park but with the squad they have it just isn’t realistic. Rangers have played to their strength all season and should make no apologies for that. Turn the clock back to September 2007 when Scotland beat France 1-0 in Paris and the nation was gripped by the qualifying campaign. Does anyone remember that game? Scotland spent the entire game camped in our own half then McFadden scored a long range effort. Hardly champagne football but the memory of that game will be treasured by me and a whole host of Scotland fans for years to come. Could someone please outline the difference between these two campaigns to me?

Finally, what a disservice you do to Queen of the South, suggesting that lifting the Scottish Cup by beating them in the final would be hollow. The Queens are in that final on merit and deserved their victory against Aberdeen (who put out the holders at Parkhead). IF Rangers win the Scottish Cup it will be a fabulous end to a season that has taken Rangers fans on a remarkable journey, both literally and figuratively.

Enjoy your retirement…the readers certainly will!

PS- “I wouldn’t open the curtains to watch it.” Is that unless ITV offers you money to do so? Pot, kettle, black.

Gerry good bye and good riddance, never has one man spoke more verbal diahhorrea than you. You will not be missed as you are a vile horrible man who does nothing for Scottish Football.

Now lets start at the top of your column about the Milan Derby and Toxic City, it wasn't that long ago that one of their derby matches in the champions league had to be abandoned for serious crowd trouble involving missiles and players being struck which lead to Inter being thrown out of the tournament and having the doors closed the following season to fans in the same competition of which Rangers played in an empty stadium, now i cant remember that happening to the Toxic City lately.

Burma has nothing at all to do with football, leave that to the real journalists on the front pages. Its clear you are jealous of David Murray and his millions as you are for ever printing about them...oh to be successful eh Gerry its just a shame that perticular word evaded you.

Now to the football and Walter, yes some of rangers play has been hard to watch but he has done a miracle with that team and it can only get better with more resources coming in so instead of berating him you should do the honourable and congratulate him as has all the real football people have. And finally your last pop at the Toxic City and the positive play the teams chasing third have played this season,i am going to have to get my eyes checked because the last time i seen the league table they were a country mile behind so much for the positive football they play.

Lastly well done to Celtic for reaching the last 16 and good luck to Rangers in the UEFA Cup Final, not bad considering some of the other great european teams who could not match you's.

Well done gerry , once more for having the courage to stand up to the bully boys smith and murray ,their lackeys in the media are now so pathetic and biased at trying to brainwash everybody with their constant piffle that they beggar belief .

Once again one of Peter Liewwells minions comes up with another tinpot story.Just having a wee pop before you go?
Did Mr Liewwell write this for you on ra sellick headed paper?

Rangers fans are proud of being British, and if you are not aware, which obviously you are not, Ulster, Scotland, England, and Wales are ALL part of Britain, hence so many different flags wrapped around Rangers fans.
Just exactly how many saltires do you see at Parkhead Gerry? (answers on a stamp maybe)

Between you and me Gerry, WE know who runs the Scottish Mhedia eh, you and 'writers' like Britney just HATE the fact Rangers are doing so well.

Why let FACTS get in the way of a good story though eh!

Goodbye and Good Riddance.

PS- Will you write about ra sellick fans singing "go home ya hun" to Iain Murray after he was sent off today, or is it just a one way street?

Re: Whingers FC in a class of their own by Gerry McNee

Just want to say a big BRAVO to Gerry McNee's excellent article. He couldn't have said it better or put it better. I am sick to death of all the whinging. I am hoping Rangers get put out of the UEFA cup final. I do not think they deserve to be in the final as they were outplayed by every single team they faced. I think it is a load of rubbish when certain people keep saying they want Rangers to win for the good of Scotland. I can assure you if it was the other way around, Rangers fans wouldn't want Celtic to win for the good of Scottish football. I am sick of all their moaning about so many games to play. Why be in the competitions then? That is what football is about. Rangers are a bunch of babies. Especially their Captain Marvel Ferguson.

I would just like to comment on the Davie Proven comment about Gordan Strachan not giving sentanta an interveiw and about Gordan not having any dignity, is this the same Mr Proven who was reporting on a Celtic and Rangers match a few years ago and accused the Celtic fans of throwing somthing onto the pitch at a linesman on for the linesman to pick up the top of his flag that had fallen off. Not once did Davie have the dignity to appologies for his mistake to the fans he accused he just carried on reporting on the match so i think he should take a look at himself before accusing others of lacking dignity, but as we all know by now reporters are a law unto themselves.

in reply to ifyecannae.

whilst it was sad that Phil O`donnell death was a tradgedy, i think it was the most cynical excuse for the glorious celtic f.c. to ask the sfa/spl for a postponment to honour a former player who left the club 10 yrs previously having played around 90-100 games for the said club.
the truth would be that, celtic were running scared due to suspension and injuries, what a shamefull sham.
many friends who are loyal celtic fans and not morons who spout drivel such as yourself.
maybe you would be better to look inwards before you critisize walter smith and rangers.
however i have come to expect stupid remarks from the bheggars.
