Blackburn 3, Derby 1
FANCY PANTS!
AIDAN MAGEE at Ewood Park
DERBY fans turned up in fancy dress — but it was quite appropriate that their team wore all black.
Paul Jewell's side are officially the worst in Premier League history. This horrific season has seen them earn a solitary win and rack up minus-65 goal difference.
When Sunderland broke their own record-low tally of 19 points with a pathetic 15 in 2006, it was difficult to imagine a top-flight team could ever be a bad. Derby have 11 points with one match left.
Worryingly for the game, it is the third time in just five years that the record has been broken.
Survival
But with the likes of Bristol City and Hull hoping to line up in the division come August, how long before we see a club go a whole season without a win?
Rams boss Jewell has sounded like a broken record this campaign.
He inherited players who had given up hope of survival — but telling them how poor they were every week was perhaps not the best way to spark them into a response.
Jewell said: "It is the same old story and it's what relegated teams do. We played well for 45 minutes and then the goals we conceded were unbelievable.
"Our fans were incredible and the sooner we give them a team to be proud of, the better. This wasn't about beating that Sunderland record.
"It would have been nice to get six points from the last three games but given the form we've been showing, it was never likely.
"We are where we are because we are just not good enough.
"Can we take any positives into next season? Probably only the people in the stands.
"I can promise them big changes. We need to be mentally and physically stronger and I have to change the culture at this club."
This was by no means Derby's worst performance of the season.
Around 5,000 loyal fans showed up and created a carnival atmosphere at Ewood Park.
Hawaiian shirts, comedy plastic boobs, inflatable bananas, Fred Flintstone and even Big Bird formed an impressive conga line in the second half.
The game started positively for the visitors.
They were 1-0 up on 19 minutes when a rare slice of fortune saw Kenny Miller latch on to Roy Carroll's goal-kick before finishing smartly.
Derby were competitive until first-half injury-time when Roque Santa Cruz reacted first after Morten Gamst Pedersen's shot was parried.
And two minutes after half-time Jason Roberts netted a second before missing two easy chances.
Then Santa Cruz got his 23rd goal of the season from a cross.
Derby's fans sang ‘We're going down — and we're having a laugh'.
They were and so it seemed were their defenders after the break.
The closest player to Santa Cruz as he headed in the third was his strike partner Roberts.
Farewell
Jewell's calamitous pairing of Darren Moore and 19-year-old Miles Addison could easily pass for a comedy double act.
Rovers said farewell to their home fans after another year of progress.
If they beat Birmingham they have a chance of making the Intertoto Cup and forcing their way into Europe for a second straight year.
Boss Mark Hughes said: "A few results have gone our way and we are in good shape. It means we have something to play for in our last game.
"We play hard, train hard and always compete until the final whistle. That is the way it's been while I have been at the club.
"Hopefully, we can come away from Birmingham with what we need."
