NEAL EARDLEY hit a brace for Oldham yet Crewe still limped to safety.
The Railwaymen needed a point to stay up but goals from Deane Smalley and Gary McDonald either side of Eardley's double left them relying on other results going their way.
Kenny Lunt's cock-up gave Crewe a mountain to climb after five minutes. The midfielder passed straight to Smalley in the box and the Latics man slotted home.
Then Eardley blasted home in the 32nd and 59th minutes before McDonald netted 10 minutes later. Steve Jones hit an 84th-minute consolation.
