Guillem sends Swanssoaring

By Jack Cross at Priestfield Stadium

GUILLEM BAUZA hit a double to clinch promotion for the Swans — and boss Roberto Martinez immediately urged his troops to go on and win the title.

The victory sees Swansea break the club record 85 points in a season and they just need one more win from their remaining three games to go up as champions.

After a 24-year absence from English football's second tier, Martinez admitted he was relieved to finally get over the finish line.

He said: "There are no words to describe this, it was a nerve-racking game. Gillingham played really well. We have waited 24 years for this and we have done it and done it in style.

"In 2003 the club could celebrate when we avoided relegation but today we're celebrating for the right reasons.

Push

"I can't put it into words how it feels but it is something we deserve and we must remain focused to win the title. It's what the fans deserve. We've had to work really hard.

"Now we're aiming to push on and capture the title."

They were made to work hard by a Gills team who went ahead on 22 minutes when Dennis Oli struck after Nicky Southall's cross caused panic in the Swans' defence.

Swansea hit back just a minute before the break as Derek Stillie parried Andy Robinson's fierce shot and Bauza made no mistake from the rebound.

And the Gills stopper was again at fault seconds later when he spilled Robinson's piledriver and once again Bauza slotted home from the edge of the area.

Simeon Jackson twice went close to grabbing a point for the home side after the break — but with relegation rivals winning, boss Mark Stimson admitted his side now face a tall order to survive.

He said "I hope and cross everything possible that we can get the points necessary.

"I'm low because I thought we deserved something from the game.

Positive

"For the first 45 minutes we were very good and probably playing the best football since I've been here.

"Then we had a mad two minutes before half time and we were up against it. We've got to keep positive and get a bit of luck and, hopefully, we can survive."
