RAFAEL NADAL was crowned Wimbledon champion for the first time late on Sunday night after an epic five-set victory over defending champion Roger Federer.

The Spaniard (right) won 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 after an incredible battle lasting nearly five hours - the longest men's singles final in Wimbledon history.

Nadal, the first Spaniard to win the singles crown, said: "It's a dream for me just to play on this court but to win this title is something I never imagined.

"Roger is still the No.1 and still the best - a five-time champion here - so it is so important for me to have beaten him here."

Nadal had stood on the brink of victory after taking the advantage in the fourth set tie-break and holding two points for the title, the second of which Federer saved with a simply sensational backhand winner.

NO muscle-flexing this time for Andy Murray - just the brutal reality of a bitterly one-sided quarter-final defeat.
