Asian billionaires in battle as Ashley is ready to sell
£260MILLION NEWCASTLE WAR
EXCLUSIVE by ROB SHEPHERD
NEWCASTLE are at the centre of a massive £260million takeover battle between TWO of Asia’s richest companies.
Toon owner Mike Ashley is in talks with Anil Ambani, the sixth richest man in the world and head of Reliance Communications, India’s biggest telecoms company.
But Singapore-based global investment company Profitable Group — who include former England star Steve McMahon as a director — also want to buy Ashley out.
Anil Ambani sets his sights on Newcastle - Click here for more
The Newcastle chief admitted last month he is anxious to find investors to ease the financial burden at beleaguered St James’s Park.
But both Reliance and Profitable are ready to pay £260m to own the Magpies outright and are determined to spend more than £100m on transfers to bolster the team, managed by Kevin Keegan.
Challenge
Billionaire Ashley bought Newcastle in July, 2007 for £130m and immediately pumped in another £80m to wipe out the debts.
However, he has not been able to spend anywhere near as lavishly as most of the Toon Army demanded and has made it clear he will not sanction the kind of huge signings which might help challenge for a Champions League place.
That, though, would not be a problem for Ambani, India’s second richest man.
His personal fortune stands at around £21billion, while his RCom company is valued at £22.5bn.
And Profitable Group — who have ex-Liverpool star McMahon as their commercial director in charge of strategic sports investment — have made it clear they are willing to spend big.
McMahon made a name for himself as a TV pundit in Singapore working for ESPN and he gives Profitable, who targeted Everton earlier this year, an insight into the workings of English football clubs.
if this get rid of 'barrow boy' ashley a good thing and plenty of cash for signings

While the big money men play games to outdo each other, I'm afraid only the supporters will suffer in the end. Makes one think about the economical climate at the moment and how they have a big hand in playing it.

I really hope that this is true and we can see the end of Ashley and his penny pinching bean counters.
I hope the new owner has the presence of mind to bring back Freddie, people might not like Fred but at least he delivered the 5th best team over a decade and got us our best ever CL finish, fact.
Any new owner must beat 4th, 3th, 5th and 7th place in the league or he's a penny pinching failure, double fact.

i'm a manchester united fan from India.
But, if Ambani takes over Newcastle United, I would be really afraid because whatever he has set his eyes on has become the best. (literally)
But, even with the extra cash, it will take you guys 2-3 seasons to build up and find consistency.

well i hope it's true, toon are never going to challenge for any trophies as long as ashley's in charge. He's missed a trick with newcastle, if he had signed just 1 world class player it would have raised the clubs profile in the asian market, increasing sponsorship, shirt sales etc. Ambani makes abramovic look like little orphan annie. get behind the toon, and get rid of these hangers on, wise, jiminez etc.

a great thing for Newcastle and also a bad thing. The great thing is that Mike Ashley leaves and should be banned of attending any future games. The bad thing is that yet again another club falling into foreigner rich men who dont really know or care about footy. Next stop a squad of foreigners only coming to a team for money and not for the club.
Sad news. Especially that Fat Boy Ashley will sell to the one that forks out more and not the one that has passion for Newcastle.

The money proposed here is unlikely. This will be mike ashley asking for 1% owners. If they did take over we'd have some new asian/ indian faces in the squad and historically there havnt been too many legends in football from those areas. Kevin Keegan may loose his job aswell! were building a squad here and being sensible about the money we spend. the youth team has been strongly invested in and it will be only aseason or two before we start seeing those players popping up. this is speculation not needed. just the media messing with us once again!

What, you mean Mike Ashley ISN'T gonna be "pumping £100m a year into Newcastle!" (?)
Oh I'm sooo surprised!
Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the way he operates could've told you that loooooong before he ever took over that joke of a football club. He never had any intention of spending £1m, let alone £10m on players - not his style at all.
Sorry Toon Army, but you're sooo desperate these days that you really WILL believe any rubbish that's thrown your way. What's that, "Ronaldo 2 da toon man 4 100m maan!" - Hil-arious.

Its all pie in the sky as per usual. Investors of this kind want clubs like Chelsea, Man Utd and even Liverpool not Newcastle. I have heard the fans are loyal and passionate but I feel once Thatcher closed all the mines up there the area took a turn for the worst. Nice story to wake up to though if you are a Newcastle fan but one thinks that the reality will be something different.

Newcastle Football Club and its fans deserve each other. The fans are the most deluded in the premiership having a big fan base does NOT mean you are entitled to win anything. The club is never going to be in the same league as Man UTD, Chelsea, Liverpool or Everton in fact none of your players are fit to lace the boots of any of these teams. newcastle united is a dressed up Wigan at best. And to top it all you are keeping that sicko barton, next thing you will be signing Barry George as an advisor. You stupid stupid newcastle fools. We are sick to death of reading about your disgusting antics of your board players etc in the papers. I probably speak for most people here and wish that next year we are reading that Newcastle have been relegated. You disgust me!!

geordies?.....strictly small fry in the football world. Always have been, always will be. As for loyal, large, passionate fanbase, don't make me urinate myself, average league gate prior to the 'keegan revolution'....12000, some gates at 4000, similar to leeds. A one club provincial city with no divide should be pulling 70,000 but your ground like leeds' was never built for that cause you know you'll only fill it once a year when man united fill it for you. If Manchester had one club, instead of the dozen or so in its conurbation, you would be looking at 140,000 gates, united, city, bolton and oldham combined averages total 150,000. Now that, my part time geordie dreamers is a real passionate footballing area. Only London, Gtr Manchester, and Merseyside can boast this, so crawl back to your north eastern urban wasteland and keep dreaming of the odd league cup.

Irwell 2 Sicily,
Your comments If Manchester had one club, instead of the dozen or so in its conurbation, you would be looking at 140,000 gates, united, city, bolton and oldham combined averages total 150,000.
CHECK OUT: GLASGOW RANGERS & GLASGOW CELTIC, Combined gates of 110,000 +, Each Highly Succesful teams, who have won European Trophies and Countless domestic trophies.
RANGERS first team in the world to win 50 league championships. First club in the world to win 100 Trophies and still going.
Manchester United are for sure a good TEAM managed by an Ex Rangers Player and Govan Boy Sir Alex, but lets not lose site of the FACT they play in a CASH RICH league, Rangers and Celtic operate and compete in the Champions League every year on small budgets a fraction of what these junk lower league premiership teams will ever have.
Man Utd and the likes where all lying with there throats cut, no money, all the ENGLAND TEAM was playing with Rangers, the premiership has only been doing it for the last 10-15 years...we have been at it for over 130 years.
RANGERS v CELTIC, also produces the greatest derby in world football. So you go and crawl under your rock, if we could get the money the english lot get, we would rule the game...remember the SCOTS invented the GAME,

People with no football knowledge should not be allowed to comment. Some of the posts I've read insulting NUFC are disgusting. They obviously know nothing about football. The truth is, NUFC have been the 5th best team in the Premier League since it began. Look at the all time league table. Were 5th, even though we've played 42 games less than Spurs and Everton. Since the Premier League began, we've finished 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 13th, 13th, 11th, 11th, 4th, 3rd, 5th, 14th, 7th, 13th and 12th. So thats 8 top 7 finishes. Including 5 top 4 finishes.
We've played twice in the Champions League, sorry Spurs and Everton (I haven no problem with these two teams) have you EVER played 'CHAMPIONS LEAGUE' football. We have the third biggest stadium in the league.
At the moment in time were not great, if we finish top ten this season then that will be fantastic. Clubs like Everton, Spurs, Aston Villa, Portsmouth are currently ahead of us, with even West Ham, Blackburn, Manchester City also ahead.
I love my team, and I like the way things are going at the minute, its going to take a while for us to rid our name of the Shepard days.
The perfect example of a professional club being run correctly is Everton, and now Aston Villa. For the past 5 years Everton have invested wisely and have a fantastic set up, and they've enjoyed success by doing this and standing by there manager.
Next season is going to be interesting, Spurs have brought in some great quality, and I do see them as a threat to the top four, but after that its up to us to try and tussle in between them clubs I've mentioned, which is going to be very hard.
Our squad is good, we have some very good players. Martins, Owen and Viduka are great, but the downfall is that Owen and Viduka are injury prone leaving us the non scoring Smith and Ameobi! Our centre of midfield is weak with no creativity, this needs to be addressed if we have any chance of making top ten. The wingers I'm happy with, Milner, N'Zogbia, Guiterrez and Duff. We also need a new top quality CB and LB.
Anyway sorry for the long post, I just get upset with fickle supporters attacking our club.

I'm sure Newcastle and Sunderland would have won 80% of the trophies had they been in such a constantly poor 2 team league as the Scottish league.
Winning your 2 team league means nowt. Wigan and Middlesbrough have more standing in the game than Rangers and Celtic do these days.

The only reason Manure & Chelski "fans", I use the word with tongue firmly in cheek, are coming on here, slagging NUFC and the Geordie nation off is that they are very, very afraid this is true. They know that they can not compete with nor match the passion and loyalty that the Toon Army has demonstrated season in and season out. (39 seasons in and seasons out!!!) If this "rather" wealthy chap does buy NUFC and invests in the team the way he has stated, these plastic, armchair, distance supporters will have their bubbles burst: will us loyal NUFC supporters, 52,000 every other Saturday, then be acused of being "glory" hunters I wonder??!! And may I just ask, what on earth is the point of coming on here and making yourself look very foolish, petty, immature and un-knowledgable and un-educated Irwell 2 Sicily? If I was a Man Utd supporter I would be highly ashamed of you, as it is, I just feel sorry for you, you and your kind are all that is wrong with the modern game, you do know that football DID exist prior to 1993 don't you?

Agreed, Glasgow is a hotbed of fervent fans, but if you finally got entrance to the English Premier League, it would be interesting to see if the attendances floundered after a year or two of mediocrity against superior sides. Sure, there would be the honeymoon period, when thousands invade English towns and cities every fortnight then head for Blackpool before getting home on Wednesday morning for the midweek home game!!, but you would soon be out of your comfort zone of a year on year two horse race. Also no Euro(champs league) qualification without a top four finish, lets face it, the Glasgow derby is only as passionate because of the religious element.
Likelihood is, we'd have another two Newcastles!

Really??? Care to explain this..
Man United v Wimbledon
Division One 02/05/1989
Attendance: 23,368
(capacity 44,000+)
That'll be just the 45,000 Johnny Come Latelys then.....
As for Newcastle before Keegan....
1897/98 Newcastle were the first club in the world outside of the top flight to average over 10,000 for league games - 11,545.
- Newcastle are the first and ONLY club in the world to average over 50,000 for top flight and 2nd grade football (56,283 Division Two 1947/8 and 53,839 in Division One 1948/49).
1906/07 Newcastle were the first club in the world to average over 30,000 for league games - 33,235.
1946/47 Newcastle were the first club in the world to attract over 1 million for league games.
1947/48 Newcastle were the first club in the world (along with Arsenal and Man Utd) to average over 50,000 for league games - Newcastle 56,283; Arsenal 54,982; Man Utd 54,890.

I am a Newcastle fan and feel that if this is true and Ashley sells, its a good thing. Ashley is a business man and he has done some good business; good luck to him. He hasn't done much right, but hasn't done much wrong.
MAN UTD - Will drop out the top 4 when Ferguson leaves - He is their rock
LIVERPOOL - Are over-rated & inconsistent - Without Torres, Villa would have finished fourth last season
CHELSEA - Wouldn't be where they are now without £
ARSENAL - If Platina has his way, Wenger will have to leave because he cannot deal with English players
If we do get taken over and spend the money, we will be back up there. We've finished in the top 4 about 4 times over the last fifteen years and in the top 6 another 3 times so its not like we've been that poor.....

well i knew it would not take long for a mishap from sunlun to voice her opinion. toon now have finacial stability not like other clubs where all there debt it on them if owners pull the plug. I.E man u, chelsea, liverpool.
ashley has pumped more than £260 million into club with buy outs players debt he aint gonna sell for anything less than £400 million easy
as for teams with there own debt i would love nothing more than to see man u, chelsea, liverpool and the mackems all have points deducted when there forgein investors pull out there is clearly dodgy dealings going on at he bridge and as for the stadium of plight who is mr quinn sucking for all these euros to buy over the hill parcels of *****
barton v diouf this season should be fun!!

Im pleased for all the True NUFC fans tbh... im not a follower of any footy team tbh (from Derby what do you expect lol) and prefer to see all clubs do well although my passion is ENGLAND mainly :D the investment these guys are willing to put into the club can only be a good thing, business men like these are exactly that.. businessmen , there to make a profit, theyve been about long enough to know where to lay money down and recuperate it, NUFC has long since been a team not to underestimate at any time , like most teams they have their highs and lows, good and bad seasons .. its at times when they are low the real steadfast fans stay loyal, keep their heads held high and keep the faith in their club and their capabilities, for outsiders to post comments like above insulting a club they do not follow merely to raise a reaction is pathetic, childlike and immature.. sorry to have ebbed away from my main comment which was, i hope and feel these new investors are for the greater good of the club and will bring in a few "better" (sorry dunno another word , no offence) players that will enliven NUFU's gameplay and take them back up to the heights previously known ;) i only hope that with the cost of the players doesnt yet again mean even more raised ticket prices which the fans have to incur.. and thats for all clubs not just the toons :D

Irwell 2 Sicily: thank you, thank you, thank you for posting the hard facts and evidence: even though NUFC hasn't won a major trohpy in 39 years we have STILL managed to massively increase our home game attendance and fan base!!! WOW, what a fabulous bunch us Geordies are eh? Now, imagine what we could acheive if we actually won something eh? It does prove another fact doesn't it Irwell 2 Sicily, Manchester is far bigger place than Newcastle and apparantly MUFC is the best and most successful English club ever, (post 1993 obviously, cos thats when football was invented remember) but yet, you just manage to get slightly bigger home support than us and with all your success??!! Would you care to explain that please? And be very, very careful trying to win an argument using statistics Irwell 2 Sicily, as statistics show 95% of statistics are made up!!! :o)

Yes, football did exist prior 1993, and Man Utd hadn't at that time won the league for 26 years, yet still pulled the highest gates for every one of those years, therefore disproving and ridiculing the glory hunters myth.
In fact, this repeated quote aimed at Man United fans by the geordies transpires to be purely hypocritical, look at your gates prior 1993, doesn't appear that many of your lot knew it existed does it.
The comment 'Jonny come lately' clearly needs changing to 'geordie come lately'.
I wonder how many of these 'loyal passionate geordies' posting on here were one of the pre 93 minority, they and only they have room to comment.
Which ones were there when i conga'd on their terracing in a cup tie early 1990. They hadn't filled their ground that season til the red army were in town, United had won nowt since 85 yet we were still the plum draw as the full house, against that years miserly 20,000 average testifies.
Sorry guys, the insults are over, the facts are plain as day, you have been exposed to brutal truths and you clearly didn't like it, hence the responses, but you all took the bait, hook line and sinker.
I rest my case.

Irwell 2 Sicily
I'm afraid like most Manure fans you live in a rather ignorant fantasy world. Care to post factual dates and fixtures for these attendances you claim? Obviously not because as anyone with some sense will know you're just throwing random numbers around in the hope that nobody will know better. Here's a fact for you, Newcastle United have the sixth highest average attendance in English Football history at 31,038. Manures average is an astronomical 5,000 higher ;) So I suppose if Newcastle were getting gates of 4000 at times then logically Manure must have been getting gates of 4600 in there time yes? going on all time average comparisons..

Irwell 2 Sicily do you actually read the posts on here???? Each and every time you post you contradict your last post - its hilarious!!! Donnie, brilliant post: actual and factual but will obviously confuse the life out of Irwell. Love his line: "you have been exposed to brutal truths" - thats ones going to keep me chuckling all week!!!

For years NUFC supporters have been treated as financial cannon fodder,by several club 'owners'.Will this ever change?

If ambani does take over, newcastle united will have atleast 10 million more fans , primarily from India.
And i cant even imagine the heights he can take Newcastle to....
