Gunners go for £18m Dutch striker
NOW IT'S KLAASENAL
EXCLUSIVE by DAVID HARRISON
ARSENAL are ready to launch an £18million bid for Dutch goal ace Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is lining up the prolific Ajax striker as a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor — if the £30m-rated Togo hitman is sold to Barcelona.
The double deal would net the Gunners a £12m profit.
But the Frenchman insists that sort of business is essential and will stun every Arsenal fan by admitting: We are now a SELLING club.
The £24m annual mortgage payments on the club’s £360m Emirates Stadium have become such a burden that Wenger admits he must now flog big-name players EVERY season.
Business
He declared: “The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players.”
And he has warned this official policy could continue for another 17 YEARS!
He added: “We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions — national and European —while having to free up - for 17 more years - an annual surplus of £24m to pay for our stadium.
“The club’s strategy is to favour the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game.”
Under those guidelines, the Huntelaar-Adebayor swap would make good business sense.
Huntelaar, 24, has a staggering scoring record in club and international football.
He has scored 163 goals in 220 matches in Holland and seven times in 12 appearances for the national team.
He is best pals with Arsenal striker and fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie.
Huntelaar is keen to move to England and Dutch sources claim Van Persie has told his pal how good life is at Arsenal during Euro 2008.
A Dutch insider revealed: “Arsenal are keen on Huntelaar and he has confirmed he would be keen to discuss a move.
“Klaas-Jan is an out and out goalscorer – just the sort Arsenal have needed for many seasons.
“He might not have the silky skills you associate with a Wenger team but he has an amazing knack for putting the ball in the net.”
Adebayor is a £30m target for Spanish giants Barcelona, who are also eyeing Gunners team-mate Alexander Hleb.
Takeover
Last summer Wenger also sold the club’s record goalscorer Thierry Henry to Barcelona, which virtually completed the break-up of the famous Invincibles side.
Wenger’s amazing 'sell' confession completely contradicts Arsenal chief executive Keith Edelman’s promise that the Frenchman would get as much as £70m to spend in this summer’s transfer market.
It also confirms Arsenal can never compete with the likes of Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea in the buying stakes.
It could also open up the way for Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov - backed by former vice-chairman David Dein - to attempt a takeover.
Arsenal moved to their 60,000 all-seater stadium just up the road from their former home at Highbury two years ago.
And Wenger’s comments are even more incredible considering the club’s latest turnover figures smashed the £200m barrier - making Arsenal Britain’s RICHEST club.
In February, Arsenal announced a massive 55 per cent INCREASE in half-year pre-tax profits but, poignantly, accredited this to the £16m sale of Henry to Barcelona.
Arsenal earn £3.1m in match income and pocketed £90.6m in total match income last year.
Their annual financial results to 31 May 2007 showed income soaring 46 per cent to £200.8m - up from £137.2m a year before.
The figures also showed Arsenal’s operating profits before player trading and exceptional items was £51.2m - up from £13.7m the previous year.

This worries me quite a bit - I've grown up only knowing Arsenal as a club where players came and saw out their careers, and now because of this stadium, we have to buy young and sell them on before they reach their peak. We're pretty much becoming the English Ajax here.

Anyone with half a brain can see that this is tghe correct model to follow. Let Chelsea spend £100m every summer. we will focus on bringing on the youngsters, waiting for their egos to get out of kilter with their performance and sell them on to numpty clubs like Barcelona and Real. Look at the facts. £21m for Anelka, £20m for Overmars, £12m for Vieira, £16m for Henry. None of them delivered for their new clubs.

Martin, THE ENGLISH AJAX??? You having a laugh mate. Ajax turn kids from the ages of 12-15 into stars. Arsenal poach their talent off others utilising the loop holes in their respective FA's rules. Funny that adebayor was 23 when he joined you. Yeah some youth policy that. The same could be said for the whole of your first team, poached from another team. When you start talikng about youth, they should have at least signed schoolboy forms with your club. Giggs Scholes Brown O Shea Fletcher Simpson Campbell Welbeck etc Christ you'll be saying Fabregas was one of your "kids" next lol

I'm a Man Utd fan and I've been hoping all summer that United sign KJH. He has an amazing knack and being in the right place at the right time in the box, just what United need to finish off a great team.

This artical contradicts itself how do they need to find 26 mill a year if this year they made 51.2 mill profit BEFORE player transfers??? this would have included the stadium payments.

I had dealings with the financing with the new Arsenal stadium and believe me the finance is sorted. Arsenal are a club who value traditions and loyalty and respect, Adebayor doesn’t seem to be showing these qualities and I have always doubted him, I would do a straight swap with Huntelaar let alone some pocket money with it!!!. There is something going on with Mr Dein, He is Arsenal through and through, as are the current board, which is why they will be facing a MASSIVE take over bid in the future, I hope they sort it out behind closed doors for the good of the club and its supporters, I must admit I would welcome Mr Dein and Co, at least he means it when he says he loves the Arsenal.

Wenger is not a silly man. Stating things like this in the press is so Arsenal never have to pay over the odds for a player. The minute you are known as rich and reckless you end up paying £30 million for a one hit wonder like Adebyeor. I hope he goes. Always Have.

would rather have kjh than adebayor if he was good enough to score about 40% of the chances he had last year we would have 1 something roll on EDUARDO'S return was rapidly becoming our best forward last season until injury

Bring on Usmanov. Arsenal have been hurt by the credit crunch which has set their financial plans back of paying of the debt at Highbury Square by 2010. This credit crunch has led to some of their falts at Highbury square being Gazumped. Nina Bracewell-Smith wants out and their is only one buyer in town who can pay her over the odds for her stake (15.6%). Bring it on Mr Usmanov. Put this board out of their misery and make Arsenal are a force again. Cheating the fans like this can't go on otherwise they will be playing infront of a half empty Emirates which is even worse and would lead to a finacial diaster. Where is all the money going. Arsenal is the most expensive club in the world to watch a game of football & it has taken 6 weeks so far to try and buy a player and it is still not confirmed why?. £24 mio is the interest bill on the debt what about the other £50 million. Where is the money???.

Arsenal will not splash the cash until a takeover is complete and also thier wage restrictions lifted..that will only happen when red and white holdings take over...Arshavin/Etoo/Huntelaar/Martins...they will never arrive...why do you think the Nasri transfer has taken ages!!..Im an Arsenal fan for the last 15yrs, but im realisitic enough to know that our big spending was all down to dein..remember the money we paid for overmars/pires/henry/jeffers(!)/reyes/petit..they were all from dein's reign..until he comes back, there will never be big money to spend!

Arsenal should get Huntelaar to replace Ade who misses a lot chances. It pains me a lot to hear that we will be selling our stars for many seasons to come. I think Dein is right, let us do some busines in order to close the gap with Chelsea and Man United. Please Wenger, move fast on Huntelaar and force Ade out quickly.

Dein loves Arsenal to the bone and he will make sure that he brings the best players to arsenal. Usmanov will be under Dein's guidance so do business Arsenal before Wenger gets tired.

For the brainiac who "helped" finance The "Emirates Staduim" surely you should have know that you go skanked in the deal, Arsenal get very little Money off the Emirates for the sponsor compared to the likes of Manchester United & Chelsea! I suggest Arsenal sort out there money men before making statements like they are....
Hunteelar should stay away the rot is starting to settle! Ade knows best! wink wink!

This is making good proffits for a club we must admit but not every expensive player is worth the price.Things will move on like this untill clubs learn how to use any player right to shine,Ade can go at a £30m,be replaced by KJH at a £18m and he doese even more good than him,so the next season you can't be suprised if he also weighs £30m and above.
The bad thing when people like Usmanov come in they create a moment happiness for a club but time come for them to leave the club and then things get even worse due to the debts the club will be owing.Take a look at where Chelsea is now,if Abramovich deside to quit now,do you know how lots the club will need to pay him off?.
We must be very careful when doing things.Wenger is a qualified economics man so lets count on him as far as the club's funds are concerned.

I'm afraid that although I like the way Arsenal function, we will be left behind unless we join the sugar daddy trail set by Chelsea and Man Utd. I read somewhere that FIFA were talking of making clubs accountable inasmusch as they can only continue to function if their expenditure doesn't exceed their income. If this becomes the case then Arsenal would top the league every season.

Hi I have just read the comments by Arsene Wenger and I cannot believe what he is saying this is a team that only four years ago went unbeaten in the league and now they cant win the league without selling their best players. If we are to believe what we see and read, Keith Edelman said there is money available without the affects of the stadium. Now he (Wenger) is saying that we have to suffer for the next 17 years what a load of rubbish we should be holding onto our players and improving the team squad not breaking it up and its about time he realised this. This is the only way Arsenal will move forward and improve and maintain a top team that must win the league next season as it will be 5 years if they dont. Arsene please take note as fans we want to win things its a top priority for a top club.

some of the comments on here are pathetic! get usmanov and dein in? if dein loved arsenal so much he wouldnt get us involved with someone like usmanov!!! they will milk us dry what about kroenke? i would welcome him definately he has a good sporting knowledge and has improved every team he has taken over, the board know they need financial backing thats why hes been invited to join them. Also were not affected by the credit crunch, before keith edelman left he secured a low fixed interest rate. And as for the highbury flats only 3 people have dropped out. IN ARSENE WE TRUST

I'd take these latest words with a pinch of salt. This strikes me as a classic way for Arsenal to continue buying players at a reasonable rate and not pay over the odds. If everyone believes that we are in debt, we can continue to only pay competitive rates, and not be held to ransom over transfer fees, like Chelski and Man Utd are.

Calm down guys, the financial model at Arsenal is in tip top order. Any interest re-payments were set before the credit crunch and independent reports show that sale of the flats at The Grove at just 60% of market value still makes the numbers work.
Any club (apart from financially doped Chelsea - for the moment at least) face interest repayments. Have you seen the size of man U's recently??
Arsenal have always sold players on for a tidy profit - this is nothing new. Wenger is just so much better at it than anyone else. The current board don't pocket any of the money the club makes -look at the publicly audited accounts before you ask where the money goes you muppet.
Let's whip up a scaremongering story in the absence of any real news. Usmanov will not get control. Kroenke has seen to that.
Huntelaar for Ade who might go for £30m? I'd bite Barca's hand off!
Hate to say it, because it clearly ins't a popular sentiment here, but Arsene Knows.
