Fergie's fury as Ronaldo snubs calls
IT'S ALL OVER
By ROB BEASLEY and DAVID HARRISON
SIR ALEX FERGUSON fears he has lost the battle to keep Cristiano Ronaldo after a sensational SNUB by the Portuguese star.
Ronaldo has REFUSED to take a single phone call from the Manchester United boss since announcing he wants to quit Old Trafford for Real Madrid.
Sources close to Fergie believe the relationship between him and the United winger has disintegrated and could lead to Ronaldo’s inevitable departure.

Ronaldo runs rings round Fergie: Click here for full story
Fergie is desperate to speak to him in a bid to convince him to stay in England. But the longer Ronaldo blanks his boss, the less chance Ferguson has of changing his mind.
A source close to the United manager said: “Alex has been on the phone almost non-stop from France where he’s on holiday because he HAS to speak to Ronaldo.
“But he can’t get him to the phone. He’s left message after message but Ronaldo point- blank refuses to speak to him.
Soaring
“There is a complete breakdown in the relationship now. Fergie is angry that his calls are not getting through and Ronaldo is furious that the Glazers said he could rot in the stands if he decides to go to Madrid.
“The club will do everything in their power to keep Ronaldo but it seems like Fergie is facing a losing battle at the moment.”
United were willing to make Ronaldo the highest-paid player in the world thanks to a sponsorship deal with Nike which would have sent the 23-year-old’s wages soaring past the £200,000-a-week mark.
And, until Thursday night, Ferguson was confident he could sweet talk Ronaldo into staying at Old Trafford.
But since joining up with Portugal’s Euro 2008 squad, the winger’s stance has hardened. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is also reported to be blanking furious United chief executive David Gill.
Fergie would happily give his 42-goal star an improved contract but Gill and the Glazers are more wary.
The fear within Old Trafford is that United are fighting a battle they cannot win.
let him go alex....No one is worth that much attention...we have a new number 7 in danny welbeck...let ronaldo go!!

Ronaldo wanted to leave two years ago but did Manchester United a favour by staying for two more years and single-handedly winning them 2 Premiership titles and a Champions League.
If anybody is being selfish, it is the Manchester United fans who think Ronaldo owes them his career when it has been obvious for a long time that his heart belongs elsewhere.

I simply can't understand these players who have a contract with a club who think they can do anything they fancy, if they don't wish to play for a club anymore they make some gesture to leave using the media, surely a contract is a contract unless Man United wish to sell him why should they be forced into a corner by a player. Any club is bigger than a player and they should make an example of these people. He has a contract and expect to see him at pre season training or face legal action againist him. !!

@Joe - if Ronaldo wanted to leave 2 years ago why did he sign a 5-year contract with Man Utd last year? Why didn't he go for something shorter? Easy answer: the shorter contract wouldn't have got him the 120,000 pounds a week the 5-year contact got him. And @davis kambi - Real Madrid is not the biggest team. It is the biggest business with the biggest number of mercenaries playing for it. The players you mentioned certainly kissed their bank account but it would have been Real Zimbabwe if Real Zimbabwe paid more. And by the way, couldn't Real Madrid have done what serious football clubs do, i.e. offer Man Utd a sum of money for the player? No, their method is to work on the player behind the club's back and create a whole circus. Real Dirty.

Just like the rest of us, Ronaldo is only an employee of a company. He is within his rights to resign (hand in a transfer request) any time he likes. His company can reject his request if they wish and he can take them to a tribunal which will always fall in his favour. A company cannot force an employee to work for them.
If Ronaldo wants to leave, there is nothing his company can do. As a contract dispute, it might cost him time out of the game and he may have to pay damages but at the same time, he is an asset as well as an employee and his value will diminish significantly if he is not playing. Also, in this situation, Manchester United would have no control over the figure they would receive in damages, which is likely to be a lot less than the world record transfer fee Real Madrid are willing to offer Manchester United to simply cancel Ronaldo's contract.

Man U fans are crazy, that places sucks, the weather sucks, I am not sure what he was doing there to even begin with. Dont you ever in your right mind compare REAL MADRID to Man U. this kid has given you more then you deserve and now accept the fact that best players should play for the best teams, that's where they belong. To finish, stop believing all the hype behind SAF, he is by far not the greatest coach in english football, not close. I mean in his case what would you consider mourinho "A GOD"?

For United this is Karma as the hypocrisy is stinking up the air around Manchester. However, they have strength in depth so it's not all bad. Especially if Madrid pay the 80 Million price talked about in the press! He can and will be replaced and another player will lead the team.

This business with Ronaldo is getting more and more tiresome each season, I hope the owners have the courage to follow through Fergie's threat to leave Ronaldo in the stands (hopefully without pay) rather than sell him to Real Madrid. The world record fee that the Spaniards would have to pat would indeed benefit United in the long run by paying for other players (Moutinho, Huntelaar, Richards) but can any player come close to the standard that Ronaldo reached last season? It may be naive of me to think it, but I hope Ronaldo would have some semblance of loyalty to United considering the growth he has enjoyed in his five years at Old Trafford. If not for the shirt, or for the fans but definitely for Sir Alex Ferguson, he has put a lot of faith in Ronaldo, bringing him in as a virtually unknown 18 year old to replace a global icon and allowing him to indulge his skills on a grand stage. I have no problem with Ronaldo wishing to play in Spain at some point but at 23 years old he still has plenty of time, and some faith to repay, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy were dispatched partly due to the new footballing ethic that Ronaldo has contributed to and partly due to the fact that they were critical of the yound Portuguese.

@Leonard - Joe hit the nail on the head with his comments. Don't be white washed with shouts of loyalty and honor from United. This is strictly business. He signed a 5 year contract because United told him to in return for the pay rise! It's the way clubs guarantee their prized assets are locked down when other clubs come calling. It's not the contracts that stop players from moving. But they help keep the price high. However, United are even more upset right now because of the 25 Million they'll lose from the Nike CR7 deal in the pipeline. It's the same reason why Real Madrid want him in Spain before the Beckham deal runs out and the cash dries up.

Let Ronaldo go now before someone puts him out of the game for good .Cash him in now, Fergie is angry as he has lost control of the situation .Ronaldo doesn't realise how lucky he is .Fergie transformed him from a circus act into what he is today .If he doesn't want to play for Man.utd. Get rid of him now .

@Leonard. I don't know why Ronaldo signed the 5 year contract. Perhaps it was the £120,000 or perhaps he changed his mind and wanted to stay at Man U at that time? He publicly declared his intent to leave after the world cup and it took some sweet-talking from Ferguson to convince him to stay. The point is, if he was committed to Man U, he wouldn't have needed convincing. And the fans should just be grateful he allowed himself to be perusaded when he did. Fergie promised Ronaldo he would make him the best player in the world and that's what he did. Ronaldo rewarded him by delivering 2 league titles and a champions league. As I see it, the slate's clean and Ronaldo should be free to leave with the blessing of his club and it's fans.

Ronaldinho was lucky to get back into the UK after what he did to Rooney in the World Cup. Ferguson and Man Utd were stand alone when they backed him, now he repays them with this. Yes Fergie, you have been a two faced, self centered ass, with your comments on other teams, and managers, so it is time you got your just desserts. Honesty does not come into the equasion with football these days. What goes around comes around, they do not like it when it happens to them.

OK, I THINK ITS HIGH TIME FIFA, UEFA & ALL CLUBS SET AN EXAMPLE ON CONTRACT ISSUES. RONALDO SHOULD BE USED AS AN EXAMPLE THAT IF YOU SIGN A CONTRACT WITH A CLUB, IT HAS TO BE HONOURED REGARDLESS. IN THIS SITUATION MAN UTD SHOULD NOT PANIC BECAUSE HE HAS 4 YRS LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT.
RIO WAS USED AS AN EXAMPLE NOT TO MISS DRUG A TEST- EVEN THO HE HAD A VALID REASON & HIS BODY WAS CLEAR OF ALL THAT RUBBISH.
SAME SITUATION WITH RONALDO, USE HIM AS AN EXAMPLE- SO THAT ALL ASPIRING FOOTBALLERS WOULD KNOW & UNDERSTAND THAT A CONTRACT SHOULD BE HONOURED & IF NOT, THEN THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES

Let him go if he wants to go. It's inevitable it seems. However, please United make sure you get the maximum amount for him and don't get ripped off like we have in the past (eg: Stam, Van Nistelroy).
It's these ever increasing tales of players engineering moves such as CR is doing, that make you really appreciate the players such as Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Solskjaer, McClair. Loyal players who could have moved anywhere at the time but stayed put. That is what makes good teams, players like that. Sure Ruud scored a lot of goals, but then he got the sulks, moaned on the pitch all the time, his performance dropped and the team suffered. Sir Alex did right getting rid, and CR will be the same if he doesn't get his move. Get rid I say, and get as many Euro's from Real as possible.

I'm a blue still bitter from the way Fergie went after Rooney. It guts me the way the game has gone in the last 20 years - it's all about the money, the bubble IS going to burst with all these players demanding silly money. Who is going to be able to afford to watch the games & buy the merchandise and therefore pay players these ridiculous wages. No player should be bigger than the club but it would appear that's the way it's going. Fergie has made a rod for his own back with that one, just proves to me his system is not infallable. Ronaldo has always personified some of the worst traits in football. He has constantly dived at the hint of a tackle, winges and pulls childish faces when he doesn't get his own way and has never shown loyalty to anyone or anything.
Has everyone forgotten the Rooney foul that never was when Ronaldo rolled around in search of another oscar? Team mate, loyalty? NOT RONALDO!

i think your all missing the point. A contract NOW isnt something which says you have to be at a club for that length of time. This is what a contact is NOW in the modern game. A contract is now simply an insurance for the club that if a player wants to leave the club will get money for him. Thats all it is. All this rubbish about honouring and setting examples is nonsense. Players hold the power and thats the bottom line. If a player wants to leave his club and has at least 2 years left on his contract the selling club will get his full market value.

The choice is his,his life is his,not Alexs,or anyone elses. Hes had a good time at man u,it's a nice place to work but if he feels after winning the most you can really win at any club that it is time to move on then it's a decent time to do it. He's not leaving anyone dropping out of the premiership into league 1? He would do it when they are at the top. It will be a problem for man u,not for fans but more to the point the bank manager, there is a massive debt in place at man u and they worry more for the global sales point of view then the player. World famous player etc etc brings world support, bring world finance. Real know from Beckham now what finance that can bring. No club is bigger then another in what it should stand for,but sadly like present life, times are changing and the guys in charge of most clubs have a priority before football in there scheme of things. On a light note, it's nice to see the worlds best footballer in Lionel Messi just getting on with life, so there is hope out there.

You have seems to forget the pride of the nation(England); hence you can continually throw yourself on the floor, put a little boy in a frame larger than England; and have continually played the British media to mount undeserved praises on average players to give them larger than god status. Ronaldo is good but not as a god. Every player in united deserve praises for this last season premiership & championship campaign. In fact, West Brown, Rio, Scoles, Evra all deserve more praises. A player cannot make a team, hence when it has always matters for united during the campaign, I had never really seen Ronaldo. When it mattered for Barcelona I saw Messi, and it was those with the task of minding him for united (mentioned above)that I saw that day. When it mattered for united against the Italians, who owe or pays no attributes (to larger than god confirmation on football personalities by British media)to names and face, I did not see Ronaldo. Please lovers of united fc, ask Real madrid to put their money where their mouth is, and talk tough to Ronaldo to keep that which you have left of our savaged pride.

I may not understand the "laws" of football but if you have a contract don't you have to stay? Here in America that makes you locked in and if you dare slip up you'll bet there will be lwayers rammed down your throat, you'll get benched and maybe if your lucky you'll get traded but only once the team makes sure you're no longer valuable.
They should trade him and take the money. You could spend that on fresh new talent who will be more than happy to play for a team like Man U. Plus once a player starts getting more and more money the expectations keep getting higher and more than likely the player will not live up to them, there goes the support by the team and fans. This seems to be the case with Ronaldo. The last thing you want to do is upset fans who see you as greedy and having no loyalty.
To all those stating Man U is broke, etc. Real may have bank but Man U was just voted the most valuable team in the world (Forbes Top 25 Soccer Teams list), beating Real who came in at #2.

I remember the terrible plane crash. All of those players desperately wanted to play for United. So please Alex, as Ronaldo doesnt want to play for you let him go. That should apply to anyone else that doesnt want to play for you. In my opinion you have had the best from him. Draw the money. John.

Ronaldo is unbelieveable! He was the one who said lets wait until after the champions league final, and here we are and still he's delaying it. He loves attention, and whilst i agree he is the best player in the world, i dont agree that he should be worth all this hassle and is clearly not loyal.
And by the way say M U or Manchester united, NOT MAN U!

Sorry Ronaldo but you are not going any where, greedy people have no teeth to bite the meat, and that is what our agent is doing to you, again I say to you , "You are a little boy in a man's game" Lets get this straight, Ronaldo did NOT make Manu GREAT , as Tom Spencer said, he is certainlly not greater that Schmichael, Giggs, Scholes Cantona and I can go on and on and on ,lets not forget Beckham who left Manu and never have you heard 1 word against his former club, what a character he has, that is what makes a GREAT player , not that selfish greed feel you great attitude I can go on and on but think GOD is in control.

when fergie stated last time he was off the wheel's started to come off at united, this week he said he will be gone by 2011,and now with ronaldo we are seeing e first sign's off the rot,in coming month's we will see more and more speculation over ronaldo, and others, the best thing united could do is move fergie on now,and bring in a new man.
avram grant is free !!!!!.
ronaldo will be a loss to the premier league and united so although not a united fan i do hope he stays.

Ronaldo is a good player...no doubt about that, but I have never seen him as a complete clever team player. Football is a team game...and his going will not grossly affect MANU's performance. We will just re-adjust a bit. I tell you for 70-80 million pounds, I would sell Ronaldo without much thought...that is good business. If Ronaldo wants to go...Alex, take the money and bust...and let him go.

Sell him to Bacelona and that would really teach Real Madrid a lesson.

Good luck to him. Real Madrid are a massive club and you cannot blame any player being flattered by the thought of playing for them. It happened twice to my team Liverpool when we lost McManaman and then Michael Owen left us to get medals(bench medals)
Who knows what the future holds? Man United are a massive club and Ferguson is a big enough manager to take the additional transfer funds that he will be given and get on with it. Great and exceptionally gifted player that Ronaldo is; Man United will still be up there challenging at the top even if they lose him.

I think Cristiano Ronaldo should stay at Manchester United and not go to Real Madrid because he should finish his contract. Man U have
developed him from a raw player into the star he is today and they deserve his commitment as payback.

Let him go,Let him go is what we hear. pray tell me who will score your 40 + goals you got from him last season? Shrek aint going to do it. Could be the start of your demise. Bring back Van Nistleroy.

Let him go, he is a greedy little pony. To think that Fergie backed him against criticism from Rudd and Keano and is now being repaid by this circus act. Let Madrid pay a kings ransom for this little winker and then buy either that striker from Lyon or Santa Cruz. Also, take Ronaldinho, he could be a bargain.

Getting sick of all this Ronaldo rubbish now - IF he does go I hope Man Utd make sure Real Madrid pay all the cash up front and not insult us with an instalment plan.

@ Believe!!- How can u say Sir Alex Ferguson isnt 1 of the greatest managers in English football? Man Utd have dominated the Premier League since it began and have been 1 of the biggest european teams for years because of his knowledge. Jose Mourinho was like a spoilt brat at Chelski and had a tantrum everytime he didnt get his own way. Ronaldo joined Utd because the Premier League is the best in the world and he joined the biggest club in that league. Now he is recognised as a "great" he thinks he's bigger than the club. Let him sit in the stands for the rest of his contract and forget about him. It would serve him right

FOREVER GUNNER i think you'll find Arsenal have been a feeder club to Barcelona for alot of your players as well: Henry, Overmars, Petite need i say anymore???? The fact is we don't have our players constantly being linked with Chelsea, Real Barca Inter etc at the end of every season.
Ronaldo is clearly the best player in the world at the moment, so which team in Europe wouldn't want him in their team. He said he wants to play for Real but hasn't said when and said its up to Utd to decide his future.
Real are just playing dirty tricks and tapping him up, fine hands up we've done this in the past but not to the extend they are (remember the Audi R8 in their car park with Ronaldo's name on the paper) SAR just needs to sit him down explain everything he can achieve at Utd & more. Come on who else's league is as exciting as ours not to mention the FA the world greatest knock out tournament.
If we can't keep him its all good yes we have Nani but alot of you are forgetting we bought Anderson as well who progressed a lot quicker than Nani has. - plus with the 70-80million pounds we'll get a brand new team could be built let alone players like Benzema, Van Der Vart, Santa Cruz and Huntelaar

ronaldo probably dreamed of playing for mdarid when he was a kid. i bet the spanish league is watch he grew up watching. u can't blame him for wanting to join the la liga. for a lot of foreign players that is the best league in the world. he has never denied that he wanted to go. fergie shouldnt make a player stay if he doesnt want to, the fact that he is shows how depseperate man u are to keep him. and you cant blame him for wanting to go now, he's playing the best he's ever played, now is the time to go while you are valued at such a high price.
ronaldo never saw manu as his future just a starting place to get him to madrid, and that gives me so much pleasure.

The fact is if Real Madrid are as serious as the say they are why don't we see just how serious they are? The papers are saying 75 million pounds SAR should say ok Ronaldo's yours for 100 million. I just hope he does well at the Euros and we might just get that amount of crazy money

Well i quite like United being a Spurs fan they have stopped the red scum from winning the league a few times but at the same time they tapped up Carrick so you reap what you sew im afraid. its too bad crying about real tapping up your best player when you did the same to us not 2 seasons ago.

listen guys and girls. The simple fact is that corruption in football these days has gone to a horrible state and probably will never be changed. With a few of u mentioning that u can resign from your job as can ronaldo, it is a completely different business and a load of rubbish. enough said. as a major ronaldo fan i would be devastated if he went but what can we do??? nothing... if the player wishes to go then let him go now. try and pull ronaldinho from the eyes of man city or go hell for leather and get messi.. sure ronaldo is the worlds best player and entertainer but he isn't irreplaceable lets face it. lets just thank ronaldo for his 5 years and concentrate on the players who want to play for us. A comment was made previously about the press cuttin short interviews to publish, this might be the case, he surely knows the hard work SAF has put in to make him the worlds best player and keep the fans off his back with regards to the world cup. lets jus suck it and see wot happens in 2 weeks when the euros are over. and to all the NON MANU FANS this isn't a slanging match its a place where UTD fans can express they're thoughts, so please lay off while us LOYAL UTD FANS can discuss things.
