120cristianoronaldoFergie's fury as Ronaldo snubs calls

IT'S ALL OVER

By ROB BEASLEY and DAVID HARRISON

SIR ALEX FERGUSON fears he has lost the battle to keep Cristiano Ronaldo after a sensational SNUB by the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo has REFUSED to take a single phone call from the Manchester United boss since announcing he wants to quit Old Trafford for Real Madrid.

Sources close to Fergie believe the relationship between him and the United winger has disintegrated and could lead to Ronaldo’s inevitable departure.

Fergie is desperate to speak to him in a bid to convince him to stay in England. But the longer Ronaldo blanks his boss, the less chance Ferguson has of changing his mind.

A source close to the United manager said: “Alex has been on the phone almost non-stop from France where he’s on holiday because he HAS to speak to Ronaldo.

“But he can’t get him to the phone. He’s left message after message but Ronaldo point- blank refuses to speak to him.

Soaring

“There is a complete breakdown in the relationship now. Fergie is angry that his calls are not getting through and Ronaldo is furious that the Glazers said he could rot in the stands if he decides to go to Madrid.

“The club will do everything in their power to keep Ronaldo but it seems like Fergie is facing a losing battle at the moment.”

United were willing to make Ronaldo the highest-paid player in the world thanks to a sponsorship deal with Nike which would have sent the 23-year-old’s wages soaring past the £200,000-a-week mark.

And, until Thursday night, Ferguson was confident he could sweet talk Ronaldo into staying at Old Trafford.

But since joining up with Portugal’s Euro 2008 squad, the winger’s stance has hardened. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is also reported to be blanking furious United chief executive David Gill.

Fergie would happily give his 42-goal star an improved contract but Gill and the Glazers are more wary.

The fear within Old Trafford is that United are fighting a battle they cannot win.

let him go alex....No one is worth that much attention...we have a new number 7 in danny welbeck...let ronaldo go!!

Manchester United have themselves tapped up players over the years, now the boot is on the other foot they don't like it. Ha ha ha ha!

Yup, let the selfish boy go, he may be good but hes not irreplaceable, hes obviously not loyal to his MAN U contract, he dont want to stay, take the money and let him go and i dont believe he will do so well at real as he did for MAN U, watch him fail amongst the rest of the real stars! Ha ha

let him go but not this season, let him taste the warmth of the bench and see if RealMadrid will still be interested. sure he's replaceable, Nani has done better in his first year, he's only 21. give him another year, he'll be than Ronaldo

Ronaldo wanted to leave two years ago but did Manchester United a favour by staying for two more years and single-handedly winning them 2 Premiership titles and a Champions League.

If anybody is being selfish, it is the Manchester United fans who think Ronaldo owes them his career when it has been obvious for a long time that his heart belongs elsewhere.

Man U tapped up Rooney and Carrick, what goes around comes around

there come a time when ever player has to face the dreaded decision to move on..for better or for worse..ronaldo's time has come...and his natural progression from united to madrid becomes inevitable for madrid are the biggest team any player could wish to play for...zidane, beckham, ronaldo (braziian), figo can a testify....it's the alure the club wit the greates ueropean pedigree of all that is so irresistable.

I simply can't understand these players who have a contract with a club who think they can do anything they fancy, if they don't wish to play for a club anymore they make some gesture to leave using the media, surely a contract is a contract unless Man United wish to sell him why should they be forced into a corner by a player. Any club is bigger than a player and they should make an example of these people. He has a contract and expect to see him at pre season training or face legal action againist him. !!

Man-Utd cmmon, wake up,i can bet it i ve never seen a player reigh more than 2yrs consecutively in premiership, take the money, get Benzema,Sant Cruz with Rooney and Tevez more goals and u pay part of ur debt,SIMPLE

@Joe - if Ronaldo wanted to leave 2 years ago why did he sign a 5-year contract with Man Utd last year? Why didn't he go for something shorter? Easy answer: the shorter contract wouldn't have got him the 120,000 pounds a week the 5-year contact got him. And @davis kambi - Real Madrid is not the biggest team. It is the biggest business with the biggest number of mercenaries playing for it. The players you mentioned certainly kissed their bank account but it would have been Real Zimbabwe if Real Zimbabwe paid more. And by the way, couldn't Real Madrid have done what serious football clubs do, i.e. offer Man Utd a sum of money for the player? No, their method is to work on the player behind the club's back and create a whole circus. Real Dirty.

Just like the rest of us, Ronaldo is only an employee of a company. He is within his rights to resign (hand in a transfer request) any time he likes. His company can reject his request if they wish and he can take them to a tribunal which will always fall in his favour. A company cannot force an employee to work for them.

If Ronaldo wants to leave, there is nothing his company can do. As a contract dispute, it might cost him time out of the game and he may have to pay damages but at the same time, he is an asset as well as an employee and his value will diminish significantly if he is not playing. Also, in this situation, Manchester United would have no control over the figure they would receive in damages, which is likely to be a lot less than the world record transfer fee Real Madrid are willing to offer Manchester United to simply cancel Ronaldo's contract.

Man U fans are crazy, that places sucks, the weather sucks, I am not sure what he was doing there to even begin with. Dont you ever in your right mind compare REAL MADRID to Man U. this kid has given you more then you deserve and now accept the fact that best players should play for the best teams, that's where they belong. To finish, stop believing all the hype behind SAF, he is by far not the greatest coach in english football, not close. I mean in his case what would you consider mourinho "A GOD"?

For United this is Karma as the hypocrisy is stinking up the air around Manchester. However, they have strength in depth so it's not all bad. Especially if Madrid pay the 80 Million price talked about in the press! He can and will be replaced and another player will lead the team.

This business with Ronaldo is getting more and more tiresome each season, I hope the owners have the courage to follow through Fergie's threat to leave Ronaldo in the stands (hopefully without pay) rather than sell him to Real Madrid. The world record fee that the Spaniards would have to pat would indeed benefit United in the long run by paying for other players (Moutinho, Huntelaar, Richards) but can any player come close to the standard that Ronaldo reached last season? It may be naive of me to think it, but I hope Ronaldo would have some semblance of loyalty to United considering the growth he has enjoyed in his five years at Old Trafford. If not for the shirt, or for the fans but definitely for Sir Alex Ferguson, he has put a lot of faith in Ronaldo, bringing him in as a virtually unknown 18 year old to replace a global icon and allowing him to indulge his skills on a grand stage. I have no problem with Ronaldo wishing to play in Spain at some point but at 23 years old he still has plenty of time, and some faith to repay, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy were dispatched partly due to the new footballing ethic that Ronaldo has contributed to and partly due to the fact that they were critical of the yound Portuguese.

@Leonard - Joe hit the nail on the head with his comments. Don't be white washed with shouts of loyalty and honor from United. This is strictly business. He signed a 5 year contract because United told him to in return for the pay rise! It's the way clubs guarantee their prized assets are locked down when other clubs come calling. It's not the contracts that stop players from moving. But they help keep the price high. However, United are even more upset right now because of the 25 Million they'll lose from the Nike CR7 deal in the pipeline. It's the same reason why Real Madrid want him in Spain before the Beckham deal runs out and the cash dries up.

Let Ronaldo go now before someone puts him out of the game for good .Cash him in now, Fergie is angry as he has lost control of the situation .Ronaldo doesn't realise how lucky he is .Fergie transformed him from a circus act into what he is today .If he doesn't want to play for Man.utd. Get rid of him now .

@Leonard. I don't know why Ronaldo signed the 5 year contract. Perhaps it was the £120,000 or perhaps he changed his mind and wanted to stay at Man U at that time? He publicly declared his intent to leave after the world cup and it took some sweet-talking from Ferguson to convince him to stay. The point is, if he was committed to Man U, he wouldn't have needed convincing. And the fans should just be grateful he allowed himself to be perusaded when he did. Fergie promised Ronaldo he would make him the best player in the world and that's what he did. Ronaldo rewarded him by delivering 2 league titles and a champions league. As I see it, the slate's clean and Ronaldo should be free to leave with the blessing of his club and it's fans.

Ronaldinho was lucky to get back into the UK after what he did to Rooney in the World Cup. Ferguson and Man Utd were stand alone when they backed him, now he repays them with this. Yes Fergie, you have been a two faced, self centered ass, with your comments on other teams, and managers, so it is time you got your just desserts. Honesty does not come into the equasion with football these days. What goes around comes around, they do not like it when it happens to them.

Hey Guys I dont think this guy is as goood as everyone is saying. He can only do step overs and he can be at the right place to score goals. No one is bigger than a club. Fregie get the stupid cash and you can get other players to build up. Let him go.

OK, I THINK ITS HIGH TIME FIFA, UEFA & ALL CLUBS SET AN EXAMPLE ON CONTRACT ISSUES. RONALDO SHOULD BE USED AS AN EXAMPLE THAT IF YOU SIGN A CONTRACT WITH A CLUB, IT HAS TO BE HONOURED REGARDLESS. IN THIS SITUATION MAN UTD SHOULD NOT PANIC BECAUSE HE HAS 4 YRS LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT.
RIO WAS USED AS AN EXAMPLE NOT TO MISS DRUG A TEST- EVEN THO HE HAD A VALID REASON & HIS BODY WAS CLEAR OF ALL THAT RUBBISH.
SAME SITUATION WITH RONALDO, USE HIM AS AN EXAMPLE- SO THAT ALL ASPIRING FOOTBALLERS WOULD KNOW & UNDERSTAND THAT A CONTRACT SHOULD BE HONOURED & IF NOT, THEN THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES

@Josh - Nice but totally unrealistic idea. If you want to quit your job tomorrow, you can walk into your manager's office, hand in your resignation, serve your notice and then walk away.

What makes a footballer any different?

If FIFA tried to enforce what you are suggesting, the European courts would laugh at them just like they will over the 6+5 proposal.

As a united supporter all my life, I would like to see him Ronaldo stay.
But it looks to me Sir Alex is doing the same as he did with David Beckham.
Just let him go Alex, You can't always have what you want.

Alex Lafferty Brisbane Aust.

No one is bigger than the team - Beckham, Keane and Van Nistelroy all found themselves out once they showed the same lack of respect Ronaldo is doing now.
Let him go - the team is bigger than one star. Maybe he'll do well at Real but he'll never play for a team with a heart as big as Man U again.

sell!! and make real cough up 70 mill to use on paying off that debt or on some more young talent. CRs too arrogant for his own good.

Let Ronaldo go. If he still wants to leave United and English football after all the recent success he's had then more fool him.
Sell Ronaldo for a fortune and sign Messi - a more complete player than Ronaldo.
Ronaldo still has not performed in the really big games (remember his important penalty misses) and is becoming big headed and somewhat a prima donna. Not good for team morale.
Get rid!
