Barryfortim2516x446 Villa star Gareth Barry demands move to Liverpool

EXCLUSIVE by ROB BEASLEY

GARETH BARRY has finally lost patience with Martin O’Neill and admits he is desperate to join Liverpool.

After weeks of waiting for the Aston Villa boss to contact him, Barry has grown weary of the delay and is now anxious for his £17million move to Anfield to be finalised.

The England star broke off from his family holiday in Florida to tell Sport of the World why he has made the dramatic decision to go public.

Barry, 27, said: “My mind’s made up, I want to join Liverpool. There’s no going back, it’s time for me to move on. I’m desperate to play Champions League football and that’s why I have to leave Villa.

“I hope the Villa fans understand. I have given my all for the club for 10 years and I’m only leaving because now I need to test myself at the very highest level.

“And I can honestly say if Villa were in the Champions League I wouldn’t even consider leaving this great club.”

It’s clear that Barry (right), who signed on at Villa Park as a trainee almost 11 years ago, has fond memories of his time in the Midlands.

But he has been deeply disappointed by the behaviour of O’Neill during the long-running transfer saga, as he explained: “Villa kept saying they wanted me to stay but I have not heard from the manager for weeks.

Private

“The last time we spoke was just after England’s match in Trinidad at the start of June. And that’s it. It just made me think that he and the club were just saying one thing in public but were not really bothered at all about me in private.

“What other conclusion can you reach?

“It’s seven weeks now since the season finished but while the gaffer’s found time to be a pundit for the BBC at Euro 2008, he hasn’t found the time to speak to me. But Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has shown how much he wants me at Anfield.

“I am obviously flattered that someone as successful as Rafa Benitez thinks so highly of me.

“And that he’s not been afraid to put his valuation of me in black and white for Villa and all the world to see.

“But have Villa offered me anything to try to persuade me my future is at Villa Park not Anfield? Not a thing.”

Barry now hopes it is just a matter of time before Villa do a deal with the Merseysiders.

And he can’t wait to team up with England team-mate Steven Gerrard in the heart of the Kop midfield.

But his overwhelming feeling right now is of disappointment that Villa did nothing to try and keep him.

Boost

Barry added: “The only conversation we have had was at a meeting towards the end of last season. Liverpool had already declared their interest so it was important we got together.

“The boss was there and so was the owner, Randy Lerner and they both told me they didn’t want me to go, but that was it.

Oneill250x320 “There was no offer of a new contract to prove how much the club valued me, no talk about players who were being brought in to boost the squad, not even a mention of a few possible targets.

“The club have contacted my advisor, Alex Black, a few times and told him that Martin O’Neill (right) had something important to tell me. They said that Martin was going to call me.

“But every time I was told to expect the call it never materialised. I found that hurtful and disrespectful.

“All that told me was that I was being messed around by my club and by my manager.

“If you say you are going to call then you should call.

“And if you say you want me to stay then you should prove it.

“Unfortunately, it’s now too late. It’s all pointless. I want to go and that’s it.”

Sorry but when did Gareth Barry become a £17 million player?

Fair enough he's a good solid player who can play in a few positions but he's only worth about £10 million tops!

Best player in an average team

What a self-serving weasel. Benitez has obniously told him to go to the papers and make trouble to force his transfer through. Didn't Martin kiss your botty enough then Gareth?

Gareth Barry has been touted as an egoless alternative to Gerrard and Lampard, but this shows he's as bad if not worse.

I have been a season ticket holder at villa for years and I have only seen one good season from barry! I have seen him have bad games,I too feel he is overated so if he wants to warm a bench up for the couple of years to a club in serious financial issues let him go! We owe him nothing and slagging oneil off in the papers is like a baby who wants a dummy! RIP barry VIlla til I die!

Top Lad.

MON comes across as a bitter individual.

Is Barry wrong to say he wants to quit Villa for a big club?

Is he wrong to demand respect from a club he has served with distinction for 11 years?

Gareth - we at Liverpool salute you & can't wait for the day you sign for our mighty club.

One thing though - can you convince Gabriel Agbonlahor to come with you?

Tracey,

If you were working for a company, any company, and then a rival showed an interest in you (headhunted, so to speak) and offered you more money and more prestige, would you turn them down?

Of course you wouldn't. So before you start labelling people "self-serving weasels", try putting yourself in their position.

Also, do you have anything to back up your statement that Rafa has told him to go to the media??

I don't think Barry is the ego type. He's 27, been messed around by Villa, and has made his decision.

I suggest you show some respect for what he did for your club and stop acting like some spoilt child who's had their rattle taken away.

O'Nelly is a fool. He hates losing these mini battles he has had with players throughout his managerial career. Ive lost count on how many player disputes O' Nelly's had with players. Villa fans are blind as well as stupid. They think Barry owes them something. He owes them nothing. Villa just make up the numbers in the Prem, whereas Liverpool challenge year in year out for major honours. Something even the mighty MO' Nelly cant offer. Wake up Villa fans - climb down off your mini pedastool & get a grip on reality. There's only one thing funnier than watching Ronaldo leave Manure - that is watching Brummies boo'ing.

Stan.

Good points made there.

Saying "Also, do you have anything to back up your statement that Rafa has told him to go to the media??" - Is spot on.

Tracey is one of those bitter Brummies that can offer only moaning.

Don't stress at her - sit back on your computer & laugh.

Talk about throwing a strop. The guy could have done this all behind the scenes, but no, let's make a big scene to try and force Villa's hand.

He's still under contract with us, and after this outburst, I'd rather see him rot than go to Liverpool.

'Villa just make up the numbers in the Prem, whereas Liverpool challenge year in year out for major honours' So 4th every year is 'challenging' is it?! Liverpool are fast becoming a joke team - the only reason they haven't got Barry yet is because they can't afford him, which is why Benitez (the fat Spanish waiter) has been tapping him up through the media. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a last ditch effort from Barry's agent to force O'Neill to drop his price (and £17 million is fair for an England regular. Carrick and Hargreaves went for around that price remember...), as no one wants a whining wantaway captain.

Of course it's fair enough if Barry wants to go, but why would we sell him on the cheap or in exchange for some dregs just because he claims O'Neill didn't give him a hug? O'Neill made him the player he is today (he was average at best under O'Leary), and to make these whining, petulant, greedy comments against him is the sign that all this interest has gone to his head...

tbh, i would agree that barry is no more than a good player in an average team, however over the past few seasons he has shown that he does have ability and he would like to challenge that in the champions league, which in my book is fair enough, whats wrong with challenging yourself?? its the only way to see how good you really are!!!!17million is a bit high though, i dont care if he plays with england regularly he is not worth that...if i was offered more money to do the same job i would take it and in reality everyone else would to,yes it sucks when another team takes away your good players but after all this is there job, so lets think about it like that

Let him go if this is true but very doubtful!!
He has served many years for Villa but has only just started performing on the pitch in the last two seasons. If he wants to play in a very mediocre Liverpool team who's back room staff are destroying a ONCE good team, let him. He will suffer just like Crouch in Rafa's rotation system, and give him a year warming a bench and watch Gerrard WALK ON leaving him behind?
UP THE VILLA...

Personally

I am gutted you want to go Gareth but if you want to go then go........BUT

Come on Liverpool, play you part also and pay the Villa what he is worth. GB is one of Englands shining lights at the moment and Villa's valuation is not over the top compared to the transfer fee's for other England regular midfielders such as Hargreaves and Carrick.

Stop being tight, pay what GB is worth or openly admit you cannot afford him unless you offload Alonso to Juve.

We want our Xabi so stay away pls Barry

Barry at pool!! why not we've had his best years by far! and anyway get ready for Gerrard to think its time to go across the pond, and scousers when you've got the dough like M UTD and CHELSEA rafa still would'nt get the right players in, Hurry up Barry get going lets see your money Pool, Oniell get as much as you can!!!

The Villa fans including James Fooker are just so pathetic - its humorous.

James - Do you really think Liverpool have no money to spend?

What a crank.

The one positive thing I can say about our American friends is - they are no mugs & will not pay for mink when they are getting silk.

You will for sure see a number of players arrive at Liverpool in these next few weeks.

You'll see at least one world class superstar arrive through the great Anfield gates.

Who will you sign?

Wolves player Hennessey - who is really good *wink* & Paul Robinson.

You missed out on your top targets Charles Itandje John Arne Riise.

A club that world class players aspire to play for.

Sheesh.

As for the fat waiter line - old - used to death by the bluenoses - doesnt work - never really did.

Whereas your manager is a figure of top personality & calibre.

Has it not hit Villa fans why he has only ever been employed by second rate Brit teams - such as your goodselves, Leicester & a team in the Scottish 'who really cares' league?

Did it not even sink in when he couldnt get the England managers job?

Take a reality check Brum mister generals - Benitez is a far superior manager than Martin O' Mad
Benitez oozes class & delivers on a level thats important (The World stage) - he's not some crack nut phoney with mad eyes, who scares every player who's ever worked for him with his mad manner & stare.

Face it James - you fighting the corner of the boxer who never wins.

Great spirit - weak chin.

Villa will never reach the top - Its just not meant to be.

Maybe if you get into Europe James, your fairytale may last longer than the first round if you dont choke.

Another YEAR CHASING!! well you've had your years in europe and even at the dizzy heights in the prem, no match any more for the top teams, just a distant memory, rely to much on individuals at the pool, cmon Gerrard time to pack up and ship out to the big guns abroad, you can do better and you owe to yourself!! Barry can domain the middle of the park at the pool with some decent ENGLISH additions!! the foreign crap is killing our game and youth, give our youngsters a chance!!!!!

Well SAID JAMES!!! Scousers get your piggy banks out, AND PAY THE VILLA!!!

right if gerrad what to go whatr price would you
want for him 30 mill sound about right well
fair enought great player and you and england
captain now barry who is keeping out lamp hardgreaves and carrecik who all cost in
the regio of 18 mill so how can you say 18 to 20 mill for barry is not a fair price plus this coming from a team that cheats is a disgrace playing a player who is a cheat in javir and now tapping up players i used to stand up for pool when were banned from euro as i still do think that jvu
should have been banned and pool but now pool are a disgrace bob pasiley and other dead pool mangers are truning in there graves

Pool are you listening?? we dont WANT your dregs!! we want your money, so tell amigo benny to get his cheque book out and grovel to the board,18mil sounds about right on comparison with other so called world class midfielders we have in the prem.

Have you got the dosh? how much have they given benny for this season?

Another season looking UP POOL!!

Right, is Barry worth the 17mill? Who cares?

Barry has 2 years left on his contract and Rafa has the fact Barry wants to leave on his side...but the problem they both have is Randy Lerner...

Mr Lerner seems to be a man of few words, but with the facts that we a) don't need the money at all, b) don't really want to sell him to the weakest team in the big 4 we are aiming to chase, c) don't want to be seen as weak by backing down....

So its pay up or sod off, i don't blame you for wanting him, or him wanting to go, but if you think Randy will drop his price to what you or whoever thinks is acceptable, it'll never happen, the whole Villa board and management know they'll be an outcry...

Moan and slag us Villa fans off, it won't help your cause...

Hold on a minute, there is one big factor in all of this, Liverpool haven't stumped up enough cash for Barry. Thats not Aston Villa's fault at all. If Crouch is worth 15m then Barry is worth 18-20m and if Liverpool don't have the cash then thats it.

And in response to his comments about being offered something to stay at Villa, fair play to Randy Lerner and Martin O'Neill. I wouldn't offer someone a new deal just because another club wants you. It all shows he's in it for the money. He won't make his mind up on the past decade of service he has given (like he keeps talking about) and how the fans have treated him and the way he talks about Martin O'Neill, the guy who saved and in the end made his career is disrespectful.

No player is bigger than Aston Villa Football Club and i want this sorted out soon. I still believe he will be plying his trade at Villa Park next season but i for one hope he isn't because i want a team of players who is dedicated to Aston Villa and wants to play for us.

On the last now, i'm not being bitter, Gareth Barry has given Villa over 10 years of wonderful service. Has been a fantastic player and captain whilst at Villa and has been a model professional while he has been here. If you go Gareth, I hope you do well at Liverpool, you deserve your big move and i for one can't begrudge you this move.

Up the Villa.

And Liverpool supporters- Why so arrogant? It also comes back to bite you on the backside. Challenging for honours? When was the last time you won the league? You didn't do a lot last season did you?

Million miles away from Man Utd and Chelsea, your just too thick to see it.

Im not saying we challenge for honours but we aren't expected to. Were on the way up to be quite frank with Martin and Randy at the helm and whether thats with Barry or not, i for one do not care.

Never let it be said footballers are dumb!

Barry completely contradicts himself. He says he wants Champions League football and would have stayed at AVFC if they could provide it. He knows they can't so he has effectively told the club there is nothing they can do to keep him for next season. Against that backdrop why on earth would the Manager waste any more time on him. It's pathetic. O'Neill must now focus on getting the highest fee possible.

The sad thing is that Barry obviously has no ambition of actually winning a league title in his career.

Yet another "big time Charlie" throwing his dummy out of the pram. If GB is so upset at Villa's behaviour in this, put in a transfer request and forefiet your pay off. If not shut up, your under contract to Villa and your prospective new employers are so keen to have you, they won't even pay the asking price. On top of that, you've clearly stated that you have been tapped up

You've let yourself down here Gareth and made a very poor judgement call.

lets put a cap on this once and for all GB is not all what he,s made out to be 11years at villa and had last year as a good season and was not bad in 2006/2007 season why was he good one thing O,NEILL thats why he brought the best out in him and can bring more out of him. he can remember himself how bad he was as the chant,s he got of the fans SPELLED it out. so i want to see the back of you GB as your not one bit interested in the club your more interested in what other top 4 club,s are looking at you. for years villa was a mid or more like a bottom table club but hats of to doug ellis he got us the best owners in the priemier ship that i will thank and respect doug for life. martin o neill will not be held to ranson by this BULLY LET ME GO TACTIC,S. and your furture boss and [best mate]tean mate steve gerard should show respect to all clubs in the world and do business like every club not through the papers , steve g you should be ashamed of yourself coming out to the papers and sky sports saying he should join show respect STEVE. now GB go get on your wagon and giddy up to liverpool villa is now in the best hands and we as well as man city ,pompy, everton are are going to give the top 4 a good push this new season and hand on m y heart liverpool wont be in top 4 finish at end of next season it will be between mancity pompy everton or villa. liverpool is now a team of the past and always remember what ship will never dock in the mersey THE PREMIERSHIP. noel o reilly irelands NUMBER 1 villa fan
