120messiBillionaire owner sanctions world record move

ROMAN'S £80M MESSI

By ROB BEASLEY and JAMES WEATHERUP

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH has authorised an astonishing £80million move for Lionel Messi.

Chelsea's move for the Barcelona maestro would shatter the world transfer record of £46.5m that took Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid in 2001 and send shock waves through the football world.

The Spanish giants are desperate to keep Messi but have been stunned by news Abramovich wants the Argentine so badly.

And with almost £100m on the table, the Barca hierarchy are split on the decision to sell.

It's a massive statement of intent from Chelsea's billionaire owner who, even before Messi's superb individual performances against Manchester United in the Champions League, had identified him as the kind of player to bring fantasy football to Stamford Bridge.

Abramovich has made it clear to Avram Grant the style of Chelsea's football MUST change.

250messimainHe has tolerated what's been on offer since the sacking of Jose Mourinho because he accepts that it takes time to change.

A source close to the proposed deal said: "Roman is convinced Messi could change the whole face of Chelsea and is willing to spend what it takes to get him.

Attractive

"He has always wanted that type of player. Under Jose Mourinho he accepted the football because it was bringing in the trophies but he got bored. Grant wants to change things but has explained it takes time and a lot of money to alter the style.

"Now is the time for Roman to finance that change. Chelsea are attractive because of the wages on offer and they are in the Champions League Final."

Abramovich is also considering making other changes. Grant's position will be discussed after the Final while Frank Arnesen's position is under threat.

Arnesen, whose job title is chief scout and director of youth development, was brought in to oversee the identification and coaching of young talent but Blues chiefs have been disappointed with the calibre of player coming through the ranks.

thats a smart move. messi will change chelsea's football. they can focus more on attacking rather than defence now .

What a plastic club. I mean no disrespect to Chelsea fans, as they are not responsible for what their owner does, but I think paying 80 million on a player as a "quick-fix" is just laughable. You're meant to build a team, not just buy one from some sort of football catalogue of famous already-established names.

Typical Chelsea, buy Messi for 80 million, and then buy Kaka for 100 million, then Sergio Ramos for 150 million etc etc etc. Until Chelsea win every single competition every year, they will spend hundreds of millions, by the year 2015 they will probably have spent 1 Billion. I think its time to bring in the same system as the NFL and have a wage limit.

Who says "You're meant to build a team"?
All the top teams are spending massive amounts of money on their players to be the best clubs in Europe.
If this is what it takes then so be it...
Of course we would all like to nurture a Lionel Messi or a Ronaldinho in our academy's but that is not possible is it? These players are few and very far between. If these players stayed where they learned to play football, then football would be far worse off for it.
So what I am trying to say is...
you're jealous and you are scared of getting your *** kicked next season!!

Why would Messi want to go to a club with "NO HISTORY"??, He will stay in Barca I have no doubt about that.
Everton and Spurs and even Villa have more history that Chelsea, and then you got the elite Liverpool, Arsenal and then my boys "United".. we have the history, Abramovich's money cant buy that, come on he has spent close to £500m already.. he can spend all he wants for me.. but the only players that will go to Chelsea are the ones that want a big pay day.. not the ones that want to play for one of the "Elite" clubs.. Chelsea make me laugh.. your a joke..Come up to Manchester and see what a real club is all about..

If Messi is that good, why aren't Barcelona in the Champions League final? Or winning their league?

For that kind of money you'd expect success.

It has to be said that Messi looks great on youtube, but in reality midfields and defences will just work out ways to stop him.

Spending this kind of money on a single player doesn't do a lot for the morale of a dressing room, at the slightest signs of trouble, there will be handbags, and it will all end in tears.

You would think that Abramovich would have learnt his lesson from the thirty million quid Shevchenko, who is the world's most expensive fourth-choice striker.

good for chelsea. messi is an outstanding player and would grace the prem league. and if there s any utd fans complaining about the money they spend, well dont.i researched it last weekend and guess what. utd s first team costs similar to chelsea s does

Most of the people who are crying over Chelsea are Man Utd fans who are more plastic than Chelsea

I think football has turned into one big joke! You got england being managed by someone is who is not english, you got english teams where almost all the players are non english?

You actually agree to allow a football player to be paid stupid money per week just to kick a ball around?

You pay silly prices for the ever changing football kits and high ticket prices!

The manager always get sacked if the team does badly yet the so called football players get off scotch free and still get the way over the top wages!

What happened to having a good old football team with home grown talent who are willing to work hard for a decent wage? To play football for a living I would be quite happy with an annual salary that the average working class joe gets.

Time to bring football back to reality again and make it a sport that we were once proud of, at the moment it's full of fairys afraid to get stuck in because they might break thier nails or mess up the hair!

Take a look at the local clubs whose players have to go to work because they cannot afford to play fulltime, now thats what you call football passion and I would much rather watch hard working lads play real football than the over paid catalogue models taking dives and blaming the manager for not winning any trophies.......it should not be about the money, it should be about football and giving the 100% passion and respect to the fans who pay to see you!

its a GAME!!

80 million, this russian is turning football into a joke. It's obscene. Someone has already mentioned they'll spend a billion by 2015 - forget it mate they've already there now. Makes a mockery of football, even chelsea fans in there heart of hearts know they've bought everything they've won recently. History wont judge them kindly. Cheque book football.

I get really tired of people complaining about the fact that Chelsea spend money buying players. What do other clubs do generally? And dont give me that rubbish of history - Man U (fantastic club) had an aircrash that the world had/has sympathy for. We wont forget but thats why everyuone loves ManU. Messi would be fantastic for the premiership at any price. We are all lucky that someone in the UK can afford him.

don't think messi alone will bring the "type of football" which is always talked about.messi is good but he ain't all that, awesome left foot, cuts inside er er er thats about it

Since Roman has come to the club he has spent £300m on foreign talent.

If everyteam, could spend £80m - £100 on players like messi and kaka it would spoil the game. Dont get me wrong, Messi would light up the premiership, but no player is worth £80m, football is passion but its also a buisness, this is just not morally right, what if something tragic happened to a billionaire club owner, then how would the club be able to finance itself and payoff its daily expenses.

If ur spending that kind of money, spend it on more than one player. A better solution would be to go for £25m on Sergio Ageuro of athletico Madrid, ribery £20m, Nani £20m, David villa £18m, and the whole lot would cost u £83m makes better sense to have more than one creative player in ur team.

As far as playing fantasy football goes, it takes time to nurture players, certain managers play more tactical, certain are just more assertive in attacking. Give time with what you have, Dont go spending £100m every season just cos u can, it spoils the way football should be!

Blackburn did it too, remember - but they had an exhaustable amount. Abramovic has more cash, he can do it for longer. He has already spent £500m at least. It's hard to take Chelsea seriously, they have bought everything - all their success. Without the money given to them they'd be nothing. It makes what Wenger does look remarkable.

Too much money for many reasons, but particularly for a player that is so prone to injury.

I agree with the poster about Shevchenko being the most expensive 4th Choice striker, Shevchenko came in as one of the worlds elite, in a blaze of glory, now he is nothing and you wouldnt select him for your pub sunday team.
Messi I have no doubt will be the same, he isnt paying 80mil for his skills its just for the name, Messi will flop big time and be the most expensive mistake in the world, regardless of the fact that Chelsea are in the champions league final there is still unrest at the club, the players hate Avram Grant and still big names like Drogba and Lampard are going to walk, one man doesnt make team and splashing 80mil on Messi is jut throwing money down the pan, besides Spanish football is fairy football they are so gentle over there. Here, one tackle and 80 mil we be sitting on the sidelines for a year!! Not good business, waste of money.
Shevchenko budge up a bit on the subs bench youve got company!.

bRING Messi on - cOME ON Wigan dont roll over like West Ham did. Beat Man u !!

You lot make me chuckle . EVERY sucessful club HAS bought it . Blackburn with Jack Walker / Man Utd have always been big spenders / Liverpool in the 80's with Moores money / Arsenal buying every french kid in sight etc. You all sound a bit bitter to me.

Dont forget this is paper talk but ...Messi would improve the premiership , leading to more investment and all the worlds best playing here .

At the top they are all at it to a greater or lesser degree. Who is the last top class ManU home-grown? Scholes. Where are the new Carragher and Gerrard? Somewhere South of Madrid. Not even sure Abramovich´s money is clean, but that is another story.

The league should be decided on return on investment - points won divided by wages bill plus transfer fees amortised over length of player contract. Extra point every time eight or more of the starting 16 are home-grown.

messi will get lumps kicked out of him in the premier league just like they've tried to do to ronaldo at man utd. i hope he comes be good for the league and good to watch.

Every player in Liverpool's team was bought apart from 2, Arsenal are all bought, Man U yesterday all players apart from Scholes were bought ...... so what's all the comments about Chelsea buying success? The comments from Liverpool and Man U fans here betray a two-faced position ....... or is it jealousy?

Blackpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa they got history, Screw Man U supporters, live in the here and now, history is where you will be consigned to if you don't keep spending money. When Alex goes so will your success.

A few questions to ponder!

History is what happened in the past, right?

I think every fan if their honest, is mostly interested in the now, only the ones who aren't being so sucessful now hark on about their history?

The reason why a team has a great history is because they where able to attract the best young players at the time because they where successful?

Anyway, where these players on free transfers:
Rio Ferdinand,Ronaldo,Rooney,Torres,Mascherano,Kuyt
etc etc.

The problem sadly in football is that it has never been and will never be a level playing field. Those who spend the most money in general will win the most trophies!

I've been watching Chelsea get beat since 1976 the last four years its been a different story! every supporter in the country would have loved Roman buying there club including all those northern reds you can all moan about how unfair it is we dont care its fantastic being a Chelsa fan long live Abromavich!

wots the odds on messi being in the treatment room for half thr season if he comez
ha ha
abramopvic may aswell make a hospital made out of gold for the fella with that sort of money

If they buy Messi they might just be able to beat teams like Barnsley. Although they have spent 100's of millions already and couldn't do it so maybe they need to take a different approach.

hargreaves 25m Vidic 12m Ronaldo 18m Nani and Anderson 30m all in last 18 mths . Chelsea Anelka 12m . Reached Champs league final and 3 points behind in league with game in hand . Oh yeah we are buying it . This will be the first transfer record we will break , Usually its Manchester Brand United ( go manchester lol ) that do this.

Roll roll roll the Hammer gently out the way

Merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a breeze

To all the moaning anti Chelsea fans and specially the united fans stop moaning I now you are still angry because that top players like Essien, Robben, Ballack and Obi Mikel has all favoured joining Chelsea rather than your Historical team. So stop all the talking about history, simply because it is history. Where are the likes of Nott. Forest, Wolves, Southampton etc.. now. We are the future and thats why all them class stars has favoured joining us.

Messi will probably be at the brigde alongside kaka as didier might be on his way to real mardrid but didier drogba dampens rumours of the exit talk but who knows. also tottenham are prepared to swap berbatov for barca ace etoo and prepared to bring him to white hart lane. chelsea have lined up a swoop for aguero for 35mil he will join them at the end of the season after agreeing deals with them. arsenal and tottenham are ready to battle it out for man city ace johnson who is alll but set to leave the eastlands at the end of the season.

Messi, like any work of art, is worth exactly what someone is willing to spend.
He will never come to England though (not in the next few seasons anyway), apart from being the key-figure in Barcelona's new project he is also loved by Barça fans - no Barcelona president (certainly not Laporta) will ever sell him out of fear of fans' reaction and political impact - remember Laporta is also a politician

joe what are you on about ronaldo 18 mil vidic 12 in last 18 months ronaldo was 12.5 mil 5 years a go vidic 7mil yes man utd spends money but look crespo was a skilful player was a flop veron was skilful flop shevchenko flop so u buy messi let him come to the prem but man utd has all ways played skilful football be4 ronaldo ronaldo 40 goals all ready has messi kaka eva done that and there leagues are not as high tempo so go get messi cause we have CIRSTIANO !!!!!!!!!!

Abromovich can do what he wants its his money and his club

Football has indeed turned into a joke. Manchester United are the biggest reason for this, so it's always rich to hear Man U fans comming out complaining about Chelsea. The Champions League, and to a much lesser degree, the Premier League has ruined football as we know it. The fat cats get richer all the time, and they are alreay so rich that it just isn't fun anymore. Who knows how little fun it will be in 10 years? Something has to change, and UEFA/FIFA have to act now.

I`m a Barca fan & I can tell you all right now there`s more chance of Hull wining the Premiership next season than Messi leaving Barca, come on guy`s they have been neurting him since he was a boy, they`ll keep him for at least another 3 seasons. Remember Chelski Barca is more than a club, hmm what does that mean well it means youth players, Catalunia, social projects and Pride & history, look at the sponsors, Barca pay them for the privaledge.
Chelsea will never have any of these. Fair play to frank Lampard though!

Omg you Chelski fans are laughable, do you honestly think Messi will come to your club??? Lol, he will stay in Spain, what have you got to offer him apart from abromavich's money?? He wouldn't last 5 minutes in the PL, he'd be out injured for most of it with all the knocks he'd get. With dirty dog on his way out, you're panicking & Messi will not be the answer to your problems.
You're gonna win naff all this season, if it were'nt for Riise's helping hand in the 1st leg of the semi's, you'd be just another team knocked out of the semi's in Europe & as for the Premiership, United have played more consistently, more beautifully & are more deserving of it & will win it again without kicking a ball, just like last season when you screwed up.

Chelsea always get accused of buying success, which successful Premiership side hasnt bought the vast majority of their side. Man Utd have done it for years, would Fergie been a knight of the realm if he had the same cash as some of the bottom sides, no he would have retired to the racecourse by now.

The point a lot of people seem to be missing is this;

The problem with the Chelsea situation over transfer fees is that unlike any other club they are spending above their means on a rich mans gift and it's this that is distorting the game somewhat.

Yes, you can point to the comparisons of other big clubs' transfer dealings but they are funded by the income of the club.

Chelsea's spending is far and away beyond their means as a business. The gentleman's comments earlier in this blog are correct, if for any reason Red Rom should go the club would collapse under it's wage bill alone and that's not good for the game.

What happened to Bruce Bucks commitment to becoming a self-sustained business by 2010???

If Messi is worth £80,000,000 (Which he is not!) than how much are Ronaldo & Rooney worth? If Abramovich is willing to spend it then that's up to him but it's just wasting money. Chelski have tried to buy trophies and so far to a certain degree it hasn't worked. You simply cannot buy class & history... It is earned with time, not money!

No one ask you not to spend money to buy in talents to reinforce the squad, it is just that spending EXTRAVAGANT money to hope to change things around is reduced to overdo, or use a strong word, ridiculous.

It is always traditional, to nurture talents in own academy, and spending REASONABLE good money to bring in talents if it is urgent to do so.

What stands for extravagant or reasonable, I know, this is subjective. But if a very rich owner, with seemingly unlimited money supply, tries to spend extraordinarily big money, just to get what he wants, to have a "fantastic football team", even a child will know, that is extravagant.
These people even set a bad example to our children, to show them, if you are rich enough, you can buy anything you want. Lol.

chelsea will never be the best while Abramovich is picking the team. What player in his right mind would want to play in a team where the manager is underminded by the squad, the chairman, and the owner?
Drog and lampard want out as it is. They won't get Messi. It's alright if your a player coming towards the end of your career and you get a nice big slice of the transfer fee and a top wage. Good way to end your career but for a young ambitious player forget it.

Buying Messi for 80mil, does not worth it,one man can not brings sensational creativity to the team.abromavich should forget about the lad, and thinK of developing chelsea fc. we need a good coach. CHELSEA FANS( NIGERIA)

Why is it that whenever Chelsea are linked with buying a quality player Man Utd are up in arms saying we are trying to buy the premiership and we "have no history"
Every club has history, it might not be up to Man Utd's standards, but its history none the less. I am a Chelsea fan and I am proud of our history, and some of the times when I was proudest was long before Mr Abrahamovich came along. United have had no challengers for years and now that we have emerged in the last few seasons they are getting worried. And if Messi arrives at the Bridge(which I dont think he will) United fans should stop the whinging about buying the title and relish the challenge instead.

as a chelsea fan i think its good cuz to win anything in footy these days it takes mony and every team is at it nomatter how mutch

As if they could do that...they are too used to getting their own way.
Times have changed and it is time to rain down the pain!

I have this to say to Lee who out of ignorance compared messi with ronaldo and rooney. No team in the world will offer 80M for the 2 manu overatted players.Ronaldo performs only against weak oponents,he was absent against chelsea, arsneal, liverpool and barcelona, but dominated the game against other weak teams.Lionel messi who is by far the best player in the world will always have an impact playin agaisnt any team in the world.he is only prone to injury.Lee get ur head examined.

Messi best player in the world?? Lol Rooney & Ronaldo overrated??? Lol have you thought of becoming a comedian kola??

For chelsea 2 play "pretty" footy like Arsenal, then u need 2 change the way u play .Bringing in 1 player 4 silly money won't help.I'm a gunners fan I won't like a mega rich russian 2 take over,I'm happy with the way the gunners do there stuff without spending silly money.good luck 2 man u & chelsea 4 the title.

There are some pretty wild comments above about Messi when the whole point here is we should be looking at how the money men - with Abramovich out in front - are slowly ruining the game from within.

Of course Messi isn't worth £80 million - no single player is worth that much money. But then you get comments like "If Messi is that good, why aren't Barcelona in the Champions League final? Or winning their league?” If we honestly need to answer a question like that then there probably wouldn't be any transfers. Who wouldn't want Cesc Fabregas in their team just because Arsenal hasn't won anything in 3 years?

It's also crazy to question Messi’s effectiveness in the Premiership due to his size and background. He will definitely get kicked but has that stopped Cristiano scoring 40 goals this season? Have you see the passion and commitment of Tevez despite his size? It's about mental strength and commitment. If you’ve seen Messi play then the question has already been answered!

How many times do you hear people making comments about how physical our league is and that "soft" European players won't make it? Yes - the Premiership is fast and physical. But can you honestly think of a single “world class” player who had to leave because they got "kicked out of it"?

Those that didn't make it either weren't up for the additional effort – Veron please stand up and take a bow - or simply weren't good enough.

I have to agree that those playing the "history" card are either jealous or threatened. The simple fact is that since Abramovich arrived Chelsea are making a new history. Man Utd fans are the worst when it comes to this but they have a short memory. Funny how the "worlds biggest club" went nearly 30 years without winning the league.

The current Utd team is possibly the best under Fergie and are a joy to watch. But with the huge fees paid for Ferdinand, Rooney, Carrick, Hargreaves, Ronadlo, Tezez, Nani it's hard to say you can't buy the league without your tongue firmly in cheek. Even if you did spend less money or it was easier to lure the player due to "history" you still bought the league! Liverpool are trying to buy the league and Arsenal continue to fail because they won’t spend the money on additional quality.

I for one would love to see Messi in the Premiership along with all the worlds’ best players. It's a scary thought that someone can buy a player no matter what the price. But just keep telling yourself that it's not your money.

Truth be told it probably isn’t Abramovich’s either!

That is not true, believe me.

i am a chelsea fan and i think its a mistake, suppose he gets injured?? do its better to spend on several players rather than 1..we should get Aguero, sergio Ramos (if we can), henry(if we wants in) and maybe kaka or maxi rodrigues...it would be money well spent

What I dunt get is y r manu fans so bitter over Messi comin over to Chelsea?

If ur da "best club" n all den u wont mind some healthy competition to prove urself now wud u? I bet da great players frm ur "history" will help u beat a Chelsea team wid a few new additions, right? U shud really support da move if it means Chelsea r gonna "drown".

Btw just off da record if we remove Ronaldo's n Tevez goals were wud manu stand now both champs league n pl? Oh btw they rnt exactly manu academy's creation now r day? Did u by any chance "buy" dem?

BTW did u guyz not see da other news "Liverpool will offer Cardiff £3m for teenage midfielder Aaron Ramsey but Manchester United are preparing a £10m package for the Wales Under-21 star". Hmm... talk about buying players...

Gibraltar español!!!!

im a chelsea fan and i think messi is a brilliant player, but why spend so much on 1 player i know we can do it but is he really worth 80 million and will we get our money back for him in a buisness point of view , probably not.
we definatly need to strengthen our creative side of play we are very boring sometimes and i think we should have kept robben.

who cares about history were making history at the moment and if your a man u fan and you have never been to a well shut up cause your fake. Man U spend just as much as we do but the difference is they are a one man team, and everyone likes them because there the only team that can challenge us on the field and in the bank.

Any Ediot can tell you that Football is money nowadays and you need money to survive and win trophies ask derby and real madrid, your saying basically that we shouldn't spend money and be mid table, and when we do. we buy the league. its just being hippocritical.

We have not RUINED football if anything we have made football better in this country, before roman came along only man u got to the final in 1999 now every year theres an english team in the final and only us once, its not just us that have got better, man u, arsenal and liverpool all have and now tottenham, aston villa and manchester city are starting to attract big players, we have raised the bar and we have raised the quality in the premiership, and that shows on a continental level.

reply to mark your values of manchester united players are way off, if you dont know actual cost don't bother mentioning thme and all in 18 months thats rubbish, vidic 12 million firstly he cost 7mill and secondly he was brought in jan o6' so if my maths is right it actual 30 months, hargraves 17 mill not 25 ronaldo was brought in 2003 for 12 and nani and anderson deals were undisclosed. what rubbish mark. drogba 28 mill, robben 12, shevchecko 30 mill, essien 25 mill, wright phillips 23 million. i need not carry on yes Chelsea fan mark you have brought the league.

Let them pay 80m.Roman is dodgy and it will all come crashing down at CFC.I have no doubt about that. And every CFC fan secretly has that thought, buried in the back of their minds. All good things come to an end.

waaaa! waaaa! waaa! let me jus ask this all the following players were they free?,,,rio ferdinand, nani, ronaldo, tevez, carrick, hargreaves, evra, rooney, saha, so utd fans stop whinning cause you know messi would be a great signing and the fact that he is better than ronaldo as the whole world saw at old trafford.

ur lucky u bought ronaldo at the right time you did, otherwise now u could not aford him,, so please stop whining about how much messi would cost and jus accept that he is the best player in the world and best players will cost you money, how much have liverpool spent since benitez took charge,,but yet they are not slaughtered by the media and jealous fans.

everytime chelsea buy a player its deemed bad for the sport, its ridiculous and makes me sick cause if your teams had such money and could attract the world elite you wouldn,t complain.

and please stop banging on about history, every club has its own history, that the reason they are the clubs they are now today,,

but if thats your excuse to use in fear of another team challenging your dominance,,then you are really running scared.

its funny how chelsea get so much stick for buying players, its great how so many other teams get their players for free- ronaldo, rooney, torres, vidic, fabregas etc etc etc... oh thats rite they wre not free

Been reading some of these comments and I've concluded that both sets of fans - Man U And Chelsea are missing the key point here.

It's not about "History" oe even local pride in your team. Abramovich is playing championchip manager with real people. When you're as rich as he is then money becomes an abstract concept. I'll provide an analogy...

If you have £10 in your pocket and nothing in the bank then you'd probably be unhappy if you lost £2 on a horse.

However, if you have £10,000 flash cash in your pocket backed up with unlimited amounts in the bank blowing £5 on a horse is NOTHING.

It's his money, his horse, and his subuteo table so he can do what he wants. And don't tell me he doesn't pick the team!

It's his party so he can rig it in any way he wants, the best anyone else can do is try to keep up....until he gets bored and finds a new toy to play with...

Abramovitch sits in a position of unscrutable power and has completely lost touch with reality.

The shame isn't that he can chuck £500m about as if it was nothing, the real shame is that the money - rightly or wrongly - has been taken from the Russian people. If you've ever been there then you'll know - they need it a lot more than football does.

NO one is worth that kind of money. someone has more money than common sense it is obscene how about giving some of it to those who need it.

I just can't take chelsea or average grunt seriously. I'm amazed they're still in the title race but they are about to be put firmly in their place. Having Messi won't make any difference to a team like Chelsea he's a good player but with the negative way they play he will be bored

chelsea can only get better and every one are running scared

chelsea are hated by every one time to act now football in this country is fast becoming a national joke time to take it back to the eighties where the only foriegn players were either scottish welsh or irish, lets have a 5 foriegn player cap and definatley a wages salary cap. To many foriegn footballers are getting paid to much and where is the money going, out of the country back home to there homelands. Time to act now before our beloved sport goes like the rest of the world and goes bust.

Just remember messi is only 20, and next season he'll be the face of the new barcelona, i don't think this is the right time to take messi away from his club

With the instant successes that Clubs need in the EPL, its no doubt that naturing players will take a back seat. How many EPL Clubs can wait for "success" to come from their academies. By then, they would have been relegated and worse deprived of the lucurative funding the EPL provides. Isn't this the reason why managers are sacked for not producing instant success for the Clubs.

Most comments are referring to how much money has or will be spent?!

well if this was spent developing talent at home i'm sure every other club in the lower reaches of football would eventually benefit....and fans alike too!

All this people talking badly about Chelsea should just shut up and concentrate on making their clubs bigger! Chelsea has history dudes and we are still making it. You are angry because we are beating your bid! Headz up all Chelsea fans

All this people talking badly about Chelsea should just shut up and concentrate on making their clubs bigger! Chelsea has history dudes and we are still making it. You are angry because we are beating your bid! Headz up all Chelsea fans

its not like buying is wrong...but when u make it like ..money is the main thing..then it kills the passion, first he just thought,..ohh messi is young and good..i'll buy him, without cosidering whether..he fits chelseas style..and other stuffs..and placing him at 80million..greater than proven legends..thats just taking it to the extreme...i love messi, but just hearing this news makes me sick..shows a downslope of football..no wonder the quality of major european clubs has dropped..except a few..its no more competitive..since all this american/russian millonaires came into the picture..its just disgusting

messi great player, not worth 80 million, what did, scholes, neville, giggs, brown, fletcher, oshea, pique, and even butt, beckham, p neville, cost united, and all except pique from british orogin takes more than one talented palyer worth 80 million to win things. if chelsea dont win things watch the check book fly open. not having a go just saying that all this money is still not garanteed to buy tropheys, it helps though, good luck chelsea, theres only one united!!!!!!!(with great history)

every1 is jus jeolus chelsea r the best.jus because chelsea have money on there hip dosen't mean we cant use it!!!

80 millions for a player...500 millions for a team.. and all these are within these recent years. Indeed MU had been a club that spent a lot of money but they did it gradually and the money that was spent, indirectly it was earned by Alex Ferguson and team over the past 20 years. Dont you guys dare to insult MU for spending those money, they earned it. Let that russianman grab that 80 millions dollar lad. He`s nothing compared to the DEVILS.Let them bring a team of 11 messi`s they will still not win the EPL. EPL is about a great team with good teamwork and great plays, SPL is about some players dribbling around the whole field, joy to watch, yes, Effective in EPL, NO.

to didi, you have CRISTIANO, true, and yes he is a great player, skill, speed, great right leg, dribles the ball amazingly, but MESSI,he IS football. True he has had a bad year because of injuries and such, but so have a lot of Barca players this year including Eto´o, Deco, Marquez, Puyol etc etc so you cant say he is that fragile. He is not made of glass, and he can stand any league (even the English Premier League considered by many the most harsh as far as tackling goes) and show Cristiano how to be a true professional. 100 Mill is cheap if you ask me for someone who is called to be not the next Maradona, but the FIRST Messi. I see him play every weekend and belive me when I say he is the future of football. He gives everything his got every week, not like Cristiano who does nothing when it comes down to important games, we will see what he does at the Cahmpions final in Moscow, because he did NOTHING at semis against barca. Someone has said that Messi is not worth the money because barca has not won anything this season, as I said, he has had injuries that have kept him away from the field for a long time and the team have had very important internal problems with Ronaldinhio wanting to leave cause he cant party enough in Spain, so the team have not done great this year and that is not Messis fault.
Cristiano get ready because Messi will be the world´s n.1 player next year, he already was second last year and he did not win any competitions with barca.

Your Destroing Fans Lifes With This Type Of Money
And It Dosent Evan Cross My Mind But If You Take Messi
Who The Hell Those This MF.... Thinks he is this is becoming buissness evan more now

i think this discussion about how chelsea and manchester spend too much money on players is pointless...messi won't leave barca anytime soon...he owes everything to this club, barca made messi who he is and the player himself said he wouldn't leave, not even for all the money in the world. it's his home, the place where he grew up, it's what he loves most...and i'm pretty damn sure barca won't let him go either...so is 80 mil too much or too little? who cares??? he won't come to chelsea anyway.

its wastage of money.one player can`t be a team.

CHelsea has no history? WHo CARES! Your clubs have no future, and that matters most. Messi and come to Chelsea and create a history.

The only way to build a team which is entertaining and good to watch! Is to buy skillful players with pace to burn.

Chelsea only have one player with genuine skill and thats JOE COLE.

Buy another three players in this category play them week in week out and then you have your answer. Messi would be one of these players but im not sure at 80 million

The thing is that all the teams pretty much earn there money from being successful and selling shirts and tickets and most important winning trophies. Roman Abramovich owner of chelsea earns the money for them and if it wasnt for him they would probably be nowhere and to go for one player costing 80 million is ruining the game because this means the value of players will go up and have gone up more since Roman took over chelsea. I am Man U fan and have been since i was born now most people who support chelsea are glory hunters if you ask me. even though liverpool and Arsenal are two of our biggest rivals i respect them because they have got there them selves and earnt there way to the top. Basically why dont you get Roman to get a trophy made and quit because all hes doing is buying trophies.

As a chelsea fan i think 80m is too much to be spent on a single player; be him Messi or Kaka. That amount of money can easly get attractive football if we scout for players from south america.
And for the manutd fans that always have something to say when chelsea is associated with a big player should look at how much their club spent in the past on players like veron-record signing, rio-record signing, ruud, and of lately the ronaldos, nani, tevez, carrick, hargreaves etc. one can go on and on but for me the biggest of them was paying 30m on a 17yrs old boy (Rooney)with no experience. This same 30m rated player was suppose to bring with himself from everton lots of goals to be able to justify the money paid on him but went a whole 2 seasons without scoring a singe champions league goal aside the hattrick he scored in his debut. But trust utd fans always making excuses for him and calling a 30 yrs old sheva a flop considering scoring 14 goals in his 1st season.

come on chelsea.all MAN U AND LIVEPOOL FANS WOOOO!UR JELOUSY will not help you. mind on your Business.my team chelsea please sign this young man!!!!

I think that messi would be like ronaldo and rock the pl, he has great skill and would be a class signing, he will bring in what chelsea need and it would make his game better, i mean how far do you think ronaldo would be if he hadn't joined man u,and man u were the worlds highest paying team for a player with roy keane so i fink man u started the high paying players

im a liverpool fan, accept the fact that we are out of the champions leageu.abramovich is bored of the same style of football,as a man whose got whatever he needs under this sun,he wants something different, its his choice, man u fans, dont blame him for what he is doin, just wait for the d-day in Russia,Where the man will be crowned king in his home ground.messi is one of the best, history or no history of the club,go for it Mr.ABRAMOVICH

Premier league is a joke…simply mantle…the top players in EPL is non English, the top coaches in EPL is non English. I admire the Italian league, the heart beat of the Italian league are Italians…isn’t that great. England could not even make it for euro 2008….what a shamble. Please don’t brag about a league that is mainly played & managed by non English men.

GUYS................ROONEY in next ....wait nd watch....Mr.ABRAMOVICH has enuf to buy him tooo....WAT SAY 150 million OUNDS.....CHELSEA the "BLUES" are on there way to glory.........of these thousands of comments ppl jus takin abt da history of CHELSEA..... guys.....make it clear THE HISTORY IN MAKING AND FOR OTHERS WILL JUST REMEMBER THERE HISTORY AND NO MAKING IN IT......ITS OVER FROM NOW ON......

Spending loads on players doesn't work. Chelsea were winning trophies with a group of players, none of whom cost over 25 mil, but when they payed 32mil. for Sheva they failed to win the league for the first time in two years. Barcelona were winning trophies when they had a squad of academy players like Valdes, Messi, Iniesta and Xavi, as well as Ronaldinho who cost 12mil. (peanuts for a player who at his peak was priceless), yet now Barca are in for a second successive trophiless season-as soon as they began splashing cash on Henry, Abidal, Milito and Toure. Man united's success is also down to developing younger players, including Rooney and Ronaldo, both of whom have now improved since their days at Everton and Sporting, repectively; whilst Ferguson's signing of Veron never worked out. Then you have Real Madrid, who were able to win with the 'Galacticos', yet because of this collosall clash of egos, Real had to endure a demise (2 trophyless seasons and about 100 managers) which they are only picking themselves up from now-AFTER deciding that spending billions wasn't the way to go. Furthermore, lacking big names has often led to clubs succeding, such as Everton getting 4th AFTER losing Rooney, Liverpool winning the UCL AFTER losing Owen, Arsenal getting to the final AFTER losing Vieira, Inter winning Serie 'A' AFTER losing Adriano, or the gunners mounting a serious title bid for the first time in 3 years AFTER losing the talismanic Henry. This goes to show that bringing in established players for bucketloads of cash is more of a curse than a blessing (as Roman will find out).

Wow all of this about a sport that involves running around kicking a ball in shorts. Soccer is for women. Should not play a sport where you can't use your hands.

Any other club would have to make a business case for the spending of £80m on one player and would never achieve that. They'd have to win the next two or three CL's to break even on that one peice of business. Chelsea don't need to do that which makes them unique (or freaks) and when you get one team that operates without consideration of factors that all other teams in the league do have to consider then you have to make rule changes to bring them back in line.

Man u, arsenal, liverpool and all the other teams who had success before chelsea came on the scene was down to the fact that they had the money at the time.

they could afford any sort of players. Who can tell me that man u, arsenal or even liverpool did not have the best or even the most expensive players at the time when they were creating the history that you lot are now bragging about,

but since chelsea are the ones buying the best players at the moment it looks like they are breking the laws. football nowadays is a survival of fittest and if your team does not a roman abromovich then its better for you to shut it and carry on like arsenal playing so called sexy football without nothing and loose all their players

instead of spending all this money, why not try to find a raw talent somewhere out there in this great big world of ours. once apon a time messi hadn't become the "MESSI" we all know about today, where were chelsea then? barca hooked messi when literally any other top club could have. use some imagination and build a team with scouting, youth, and an overall footballing concept. not just by buying established star players for way too much money. just my opinion

All the manu fans who are saying that chelsea is ruining the football by spending a lot of money in buying players, then what the hell they are doing.
They are also doing the same thing.
So As a chelsea fan i want to say that if messi comes to chelsea it will be great to challenge manu.

i rally like to no if messi will come to chelsea
