Canadian group ready to launch bid
SPURS £250m TAKEOVER
EXCLUSIVE by DAVID HARRISON
SPURS are the target for a sensational £250million takeover by the man behind the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Top officials from the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) visited White Hart Lane on a fact-finding mission recently.
And they returned to Canada convinced Tottenham were ripe for a buy-out.
The visit was led by Richard Peddie, president and chief executive of MLSE, along with his chief financial officer, Ian Clarke.
Attractive
Now the Toronto sports holding company, which owns the famous Maple Leafs ice hockey team, has retained consultants Deloitte & Touche to advise on them on the proposed deal.
Peddie said: "We went over there with our eyes wide open on everything. We came away with a lot of ideas on how to maximise revenues but I don't know where it will take us."
A well-placed source in Toronto confirmed that Spurs are a hugely attractive target.
The source said: "MLSE are seriously considering a move into English soccer.
"They recognise that Tottenham is a well-established club that would benefit from new investment and the development of a new stadium.
"The Canadians have experience of extensively developing the Maple Leafs ice hockey team and could bring some of this expertise to the Premier League.
"They have the resources and the energy and desire to move Spurs forward into a new era of success."
According to Candian sources MLSE, who are valued at 1.75billion dollars, could initially move to create a marketing partnership with Tottenham before launching a full takeover.
Kitty
Peddie and Clarke also visited Chelsea's Stamford Bridge, Reading's Madejski Stadium and Southampton's St Mary's Stadium as part of their week-long fact finding trip.
It was Spurs, though, who have whetted Peddie's appetite to join the growing number of foreign owners.
Peddie knows Spurs are in a relatively healthy financial position despite owners, ENIC, having lost £500m in the collapse of American bank, Bear Stearns.
Tottenham officials claim that has not affected the club and manager Juande Ramos will be given a major transfer kitty to spend in the summer.
Spurs have already made a huge statement of intent with the £20million signing of Luka Modric and chairman Daniel Levy has promised more cash.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who owns our club, if the players continue to play as they are at the moment we will be nothing but a mid table club for the forseeable future.
Draws against Bolton, Wigan & Middlesbrough ?!?
Lets hope Ramos ships out the deadwood come the end of the season and brings in some young hungry players !!

why are enic going to sell out, they do not have money problems, spurs are on the verge of breaking into the champions league and with that comes massive profits. After their investments they would want to reap the benifits assosiated with it

Trust me ppl i am a canadian. But im also a maple leafs fan and Toronto FC and Toronto Raptors fan (both teams owned by Toronto) but if u are seriously happy with this news of probable of takeover this management for as much money as they have dont spend money on the club. Rather they do things in the best interest for themselves, get a huge profit then shed out like 2-8 percent of their profit( 20$ Million dollars canadian) Is tht really the ownership you want to run your team which u claim is on the verge of making the champs league. Trust me you dont

umm what in the world is Jazasq talking about? MLSE are masters are building revenue. The leafs are on the rise as soon as peddie and flecther find a new president/GM. The raps have made the playoffs 2 straight years and are learning. plus the toronto FC is now above .500 for the first time in franchise history, by winning 3 straight for also the first time. There is nothing wrong with MLSE buying the football club as they have NO knowledge whatsoever about football (soccer). The only reason they did meddle in the leafs was because they ARE hockey fans and thought they knew best. I can assure you that this will NOT happen with the Spurs.

MLSE are great businessmen... they make some of the highest profits of any sporting group in the world.
sometimes they can be a bit cheap in hiring (they'll hire up and comers to run a team, then when the team fails, they'll finally fork out the money for experienced management). But that attention to the business usually means the teams eventually get good because winning is good for business.

I live in Toronto. This is a bad move - if you want your Spurs to have a strong future, you should do everything in your power to keep MLSE out.
MLSE is owned by the Ontario Teacher's Pension Fund. Their only objective is to maximize their investment returns, and they show no real interest in winning championships. I would say MLSE in the best sports club owners in all of North American sports in terms of generating revenues and marketing, but they also constantly field the worst teams.
Moreover, MLSE have a history to rip off their fans. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the most storied franchise in the National Hockey League and have the most loyal fan support in the league. As a result, the company have raised tickets by 10% every year, but they don't put anything back into the team. The Maple Leafs' ticket prices are 50% to 60% higher than everyone else. Most recently, their greed have led them to block the expansion of a hockey team located in Hamilton (about 50 km away from Toronto) by enforcing a anti-competition clause with the league. It is a love-hate relationship with the people of Toronto. We love the team but hate the owners.
Everything that is associated with MLSE will be winners from the financial side and losers on the field. Don't let this happen!!!

MLSE are all about making money, not winning championships. It should be interesting however to see how they operate in an arena where failure is punished with demotion.

I've been a Leafs fan for a decade, and I will say that a lot of the stories about MLSE are overblown. Before the salary cap era in the National Hockey League, the Leafs had the highest payroll in the (close to $70 million for their roster). They are not afraid to spend money at all. MLSE is a very stable organization - their profits rose 23% last year so there is no fear that they will be cheapskates.
As for the poster that said the Leafs have been raising ticket prices every year, they slashed ticket prices two years ago and they are not raising prices for the upcoming season. The reason the tickets are such an astronomical price is due to the popularity of the Leafs in the city. It's basic supply and demand (I am a student and I still managed to attend four Leaf games this year).
The problem with the hockey side of the operation is that there has been a lot of disagreement on who to hire as the general manager and president. On the other hand, their basketball (NBA) team is flourishing. They hired a former NBA Executive of the Year. As long as MLSE bows out of the day-to-day operations of the sports team, the team will excel. The other clubs they own - Toronto Football Club for example, is also doing well. I am certain that they will hardly interfere with the Spurs football team since they are not as well-acquainted with the league as they are with the NHL. Things you can look forward to in the future (which both Leafs and Raptors fans already have), a n entire digital channel dedicated to your team ;).

"The Toronto Maple Leafs are the most storied franchise in the National Hockey League."
A lot of people in Montreal will disagree with this. Leaf fans get exactly the team they deserve.

MLSE? I am on the fence with this one.

At the end of the day we are all playing expert here. I hate to say it but none of us know anything about what goes on at MLSE or what their motives are. There is nothing wrong with the teams they own, and the Maple Leafs problems started WAY before MLSE ever showed up. Give them a chance before you paint them all as villains. Spurs could do alot worse.

lol all these MLSE bashers are probably all from Montreal, seeing as they are jealous of the organization

I too am a Leafs fan from Canada. Do not accept a bid from MLSE. Peddie is a brilliant marketing man who has greatly extended the Leafs brand into TV and real estate. He is largely responsible for their financial success.
MLSE is, however, completely inept at hiring quality hockey people to run the franchise. Bickering amongst the ownership group has left the Leafs mired in mediocrity. MLSE is more interested in profit than championships. The Spurs are likely to suffer the same fate.
