Roman puts block on Russia deal for Guus
HIDDINK HEADS FOR BLUES
EXCLUSIVE by DAVID HARRISON
GUUS HIDDINK is dramatically being lined up to take over as Chelsea boss in the summer.
The Dutchman, whose contract as Russia chief expires at the end of Euro 2008, is in pole position to succeed under-fire Avram Grant.
Although there is an option for him to extend his Russian contract by two years until the 2010 World Cup finals, his future is firmly under the control of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
And the billionaire is refusing to approve Hiddink's new deal — much to the frustration of the Russian Football Federation.
A source in Holland declared: "Guus Hiddink's future as Russia coach is in doubt.
Block
"Abramovich has put the block on his contract extension and those close to Guus reckon that will pave the way for him to take over at Chelsea."
There are three parties involved in the coach's contract negotations — Hiddink, the Federation and the Russian National Football Academy.
The Academy is financed by Abramovich and it is through this organisation that he pays Hiddink's £1.2million a year wages.
The Dutchman has been linked with Chelsea in the past and has remained close friends with Piet de Visser, his former head scout at PSV Eindhoven, who is now a personal assistant to Abramovich.
We understand that Abramovich is less than impressed with Grant's management style — his handling of tactics, the lack of entertainment on the pitch and his dour public image.
Grant will seek a meeting with Abramovich to discuss his future following the Champions League semi-final first leg with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.
The Israeli, who signed a £2.5million-a-year deal after taking over from Jose Mourinho in September, is likely to try and negotiate a £5m pay-off rather than stay at Chelsea in a backroom capacity.
Abramovich could be left with an embarrassing situation if Grant wins the Premier League, the Champions League — or both.
The manager will also sit down with dissident star Tal Ben Haim and players’ rep John Terry tomorrow to discuss his decision to fine the defender £80,000 for his midweek outburst.
Ben Haim, who signed from Bolton on a free transfer in the summer, said he would never have joined the club had he known Mourinho was about to be sacked.
Hiddink is obviously an excellent candidate, however Chelsea need some stability and development if they are to progress. Frank Rijkard would be a better bet, unless, of course Abramhovic could be persuaded to swallow his pride and ego and bring back the best manager Chelsea ever had. Yes , Mourinho.

According to a latest of Chelsea fans between winning the Premiership or getting rid of Avram Grant the majority favoured the sacking of Grant ahead of winning the title!

The sooner the TOAD goes the better.
Obviously Roman will not listen to the fans, otherwise he would bring back JM, but Hiddink is a good choice, but I can not see Hiddink listen or have any time for the Toad if he stays as director of football, maybe his obsession with connes will make him change the colour to blue.
Get rid of the toad rather than lose our players.

why do so called chelsea fans complain week after week about Avram Grant when he has done a fantastic job for their little club?.nobody else could have done any better than grant.lets face truths here chelsea are hardly a big club when compared to man utd, arsenal, liverpool throwing money at a club and hoping does not make a big club after all blackburn tried that a number of years ago.yes they won the premiership a couple of times but they are punching above their weight.take abromovichs money away watch them freefall.in conclusion thinking you are a big club does not make you a big club just ask leeds utd

i like hiiim! So he's not flamboyant, as controversial, as colourful or as big mouthed as Mourhino was, but he's producing results with exactly the same team tha Mourhino wasn't able to at the start. credit has to be given to Grant for keeping the blues in the title hunt at the squeeky bum end of the season. This is Mourhino's team, Grant just added to it to improve his prospects with no where near as enough money as mourhino spent. Why do you want Mourhino back - the sel proclaimes special one who invented boring boring football.. when the going was easy he got tough and got results at a time when manchester united and arsenal were not on song. but when manchester united won their league title for a 9th time he gave up - and spent 30million on rubbish players.. so why you want mourhino back is beyond me.
Ne'er the less GLORY GLORY MANCHESTER UNIIIITED -
WE WILL END YOUR 4 YEAR UNBEATEN HOME RECORD.. WE ARE THE TRUE RECORD BREAKERS.. BE PREPARED TO SHED TEARS AS WE DO A LAP OF HONOUR AROUND YOUR PITCH FOR OUR FANS... "WE WON IT TEN TIMES, WE WON IT TEN TIMES!!"

If Chelsea win any of the competitions they are in Grant should go anyway, he's not up to the challenge of big games even if they are against small teams (Barnsley). The dressing room is becoming a place where the players are feelin the heat instead of the calmness that a manager should be instilling in them. Frank Rijkard for coach!

At least Hiddink has 3 key qualities that AG doesn't possess. he's won things, known to be a top tactician and probably does have another big club job in him. Supposed to be hard on players (no bad thing) and won't have any messing about. Bring him on I say ... or is this yet another tabloid piece of dream work??

I think all of you British fans are dumb. You can't wait for your team to lose the trophys and you continue mucking GRANT for the cash ROMAN gives him... all of you people are pathethic - 5 years ago you were a boring club with nothing to show - everything you won since than is not becouse of your blue blood and not becouse of the Speciel one (I must say he IS a good coach but he took it to far with the BOSS). Anyway - stop crying every week like little girls - you are not a football fan but a rabish tabloisds fan. it's a shame

It's hard to have even an ounce of sympathy for Chelsea fans. How do you take them seriously given their mass obsession for Chelsea to fail, just so they can see Avram Grant get sacked. It's laughable!
Over the past few months, when Chelse have gone on a great run of results, their fans exclaim it's all because of the players. However, after one of their very rare losses, or even draw, then it's all down to Avram Grant, and absolutely nothing to do with the players.
Chelsea fans' loyalty to their ex-manager, and not their club, has been one of the most nonsensical highlights of this season.
I really do look forward to the day when Roman tires of all these Chelsea fans' whingeing & moaning, takes his money out of the club, and duly sends them back to fighting relegation where they rightly belong.

Bring on Guus asap,Chelski fans, and start longing for AG.
The man produced better percentage than the Special One (a fact)
He'll win one of the two (the Champions) in spite of Drogba and others sabotaging the club.
He should kick Chelski goodbye.
Guus will not do better - on the contrary. He did well looooong ago with Dutch national.
Sir Alex and Arsene are not producing the same percentage as AG... That's a fact too. If not for the Special One's limping start Chelsea would have been 4 points ahead of Man U... think about it. JM's football was the opposite of attractive, so how come you miss the big mouth?

Sack Grant. He's not up to the job and tears our fans apart. If Abramovich listens to our fans, he'll bring back The Special One, who is much better than Grant in any perspective. Guus Hiddink, however, would be also a decent choice, if his appointment came about. Grant is far from being given credit by the fans and is short of support by the players and the board. There is hardly anyone who wants him at Chelsea.

Its not Grant who should go, its all the Johnny Come Lately's who claim to "support" MY great club. Get over yourselves. We are 2nd in the League and in with a great shout of the CL. If you need to beat someone with a stick then blame Kenyon. Also take a look in the mirror and ask yourselfs "Have I made enough noise at the ground this season"
Grant was not my choice for like 99.9% of our fans and I was gutted when JM was SACKED. But his gone....get over it and support the club (or better still, go and support Man Utd like all the other glory-hunters)

please only comment if you are a real supporter of football, not a couch potato.
Grant must go, he is unqualified, inexperienced and simply not up to the job. Better record than Jose, how many titles has Grant won in proper football. Jose managed Porto & Chelsea to four league titles in four years. He also won Uefa Cup, Champions League, 2 English League Cup's & the FA Cup. 5 years unbeaten at home (for Porto & Chelsea). Grant is caretaker only, the sooner Roman sorts it the better.
All this talk of Chelsea not being a big club without RA's money makes me laugh.
Look at the stat's boys, 5th best supported club in England since records began (before the war), with over 40,000 average gate over 103 years in existance.

Hello there. I'm a football fan from Israel. I was never a fan from Avram, due to the simple fact that he only coached teams I hated in Israel.. But I simply can't understand the fact that some of you are so obsessed with Morinoh and with sacking Grant. Let's check the facts:
1) Results- When Morionoh quit, Chelsea were in deep trouble in the premier-leauge and had a bad start in champions league. Now they are in Champion's semi-final, hopped over Arsenal and are only 3 points from Man U.
2) Style- It's true, Grant's Chelsea doens't play truly thrilling football. Grant's teams never did. But it's much better than Morinioh's era!! Morionoh is the most defensive football coach ever, he got so many stars and still always played for those boring 1-0.

JM Fottball was boring as ever, the only big diffrent he brought 2 major tophies after RA gave him the money to do so
the real test is always the 3rd year look at barcelona this year look at zidane's real madrid in 3rd year
JM failed it this season until AG come 2 the rescue
They only reason for JM succss in porto r the marvalous players he had'like deco costinha R Carvalho Costa paulo ferriera they were there before morinho and morinho just bulid on that success just like AG is doing tis year only better

Funny how some people say that Hiddink didn't prove himself at a club yet, only at national teams. Forgot that Hiddink won the European Cup (now Champions League) with PSV in 1988? And the Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid in 1998? He HAS proven himself at club level, most recently again at PSV with two Dutch League titles and a Champions League semi-final in 2004/2005.
As said before, his record at national teams is outstanding as well. World Cup semi-final with Holland in 1998 and South-Korea in 2002, and qualifying and reaching the 2nd round with Australia in 2006. Qualifying with Russia for Euro 2008 - admittedly with some luck - was not an easy feat either, considering England and Croatia were in the group as well.
For Chelsea, Hiddink is a very wise choice. He is an excellent manager, with a lot of international experience, a good track record and great coaching skills. Many players who have worked with Hiddink say that he is an excellent manager. To quote Mark Viduka: "He is definitely the best manager that I've worked with". That's just one player, many more say the same thing.
