Capello: I'm not doing him a favour

BECKHAM DESERVES CALL-UP

FABIO CAPELLO insists David Beckham’s return to the England squad is solely on merit and has nothing to do with sentiment.

The England boss admits he is aware of the clamour for Becks to finally capture a dreamed of 100th cap for his country.

But the no-nonsense Italian says that has nothing to do with the La Galaxy midfielder’s recall.

Capello said: “I understand the nation’s obsession but I’m not obsessed with David Beckham.

“In my career, in my life as a football coach and manager, I’ve always made my own decisions.

“And I’ve never been put under pressure – because those who choose me, know me.

“So let’s get one thing straight - I don’t call players up to do them a favour. It’s not my style.

“I will call up players I believe are useful to the team with a view to future games and what I need to do in the future.

“I called him up because I believe he is going to be useful to the team.

“For when David is fit he can always bring an important contribution because of his vision on the pitch and the fact that he can cross the ball and always create chances.

“Not only from free-kicks, but during open play as well.”

Such a positive appraisal has created the expectation that, having recalled a player of the stature of Beckham, Capello is now sure to play him.

But the manager’s response to that notion was short and sharp: “We will see about that!”

And Capello was equally curt when quizzed over any FA protocol regarding Beckham being honoured with the captaincy to celebrate his centenary occasion.

“I’m not aware of such a ruling,” he said.

He also rubbished the suggestion that Beckham should have been totally ignored now he has opted out of top flight football to play Major League Soccer in the US.

Capello stressed: “Good players are good players whether they play in the US, in England or in Spain.

“And on top of that I believe David Beckham is probably fresher than other players at the moment, having just started his season.”
