Leatherheads

080403leatherheadsA 1930's style comedy about the early days of American football was always starting from a low point on the 'time to get excited' scale.

But 'Leatherheads, the latest directorial effort by George Clooney, even manages to go down hill from there.

Vantage Point

Vantagepoint2

The assassination of the US President on the eve of an historic treaty signing in Spain is repeatedly played out from the various 'Vantage Points' of the main characters.

In trying to emulate those big budget super slick US TV shows, 'Vantage Point' is at an immediate disadvantage.

Shows like '24', 'The Sopranos', & 'The Kill Point' have the luxury of a whole series to flesh out characters and tease with plots.

This movie has to do it all in a couple of hours & sadly it shows.

The Game Plan

Gameplans600x600

Arnie in Kindergarten Cop? Wooden

Van Diesel in The Pacifier? Excruciating

Murphy in Daddy Day Care? Just plain embarrassing.

Now we have 'The Rock' in 'The Game Plan'.

Forgive me if I seem slightly less than underwhelmed at the prospect.

Aladdin: Musical Masterpiece Edition

Aladdin_jasmine_abooWhen every Disney release is automatically hailed a classic, what do you call a film as great as Aladdin?

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep

071219waterhorse

Remember when story, character and atmosphere were considered just as important as CGI mayhem and carnage?

Well, for all the state-of- the- art special effects from the team behind Lord of the Rings, this Hollywood take on the nessie story harks back to those gentler times

This is no ET- but by showing that a kid's film doesn't have to be based on a comic book, 'The Water Horse' feels like a welcome breath of clean Scottish air.

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets

Nicolascagenationaltreasure2_855_18

Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones, that part time lecturer, part time adventurer, this time searching for a lost city of gold.

Oops sorry- wrong film.

Nicolas Cage returns as Ben Gates, that other part time lecturer and part time adventurer on the search for a different lost city of gold altogether.

Yes it's National Treasure 2 Book of Secrets out now on Disney DVD- and just to make that sense of deja vu even more freaky, it's pretty much the same as National Treasure 1.

Hulk: Lou Ferrigno Interview

Louferrignothe30thannualsaturnawardFor a whole generation he was the snarling, growling face of the Incredible Hulk.

Bearing an uncanny physical resemblance to the comic book beast, you may think Lou Ferrigno would be just as fearsome as his famous alter ego.

But as he tells us in this interview for News of the World online, at heart he is really a bit of softy-

"You know, I don't like hurting people."

Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet St

Sweeneytodd21024

I don't know what it says about me, but I thought a musical about a manic depressive barber slicing unsuspecting customers throats (before having them served up in delicious pies) might be a bit of a laugh.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet St is quite brilliant.

But a singalong, laugh a minute black comedy it ain't.

Truth be told Tim Burton's film version of the Sondheim stage hit is grim. Very grim.
