EASTERN European zombies are grafters, I'll give them that.

Once they get started killing the bunch of mercenaries who invade their home in an old World War II bunker, it's bish bosh and they're done in around half an hour—no messing about.

The mercenaries, led by ex-marine DC (Ray Stevenson), have been hired to protect Hunt, an English businessman (Julian Wadham from The English Patient) who has a mysterious desire to find out what's in there.

What they discover is that the Nazis used it for some pretty far-out genetics experiments 60-odd years ago.

Problem is, the results of the experiments are still hanging around. And after more than half a century, they're peckish.

So commences an hour and a half of gory kills and tense, torchlit scares which, at its best, puts this movie up there with Dog Soldiers, the cult classic Brit werewolf film.

But sadly, the fab central concept is spread too thin—some fresh ideas would have been welcome towards the end.

If you're a fan of home-grown horror, this is one you'll not want to miss. It's good—but not quite good enough to warrant an all-out thumbs-up.
