Enchanted
By Ian McCreath
The feel good hit of last Christmas, sees Disney gently take the M-i-c-k-e-y out of it's own fairy tale past.
But Disney being Disney there is no room for cynicism.
Wonder and innocence maintain their top billing here, despite the occasional cheeky poke at itself.
Turning the classic 'adventure in a magical land' plot on its head, Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) is banished to earth from her magical and musical land by her evil step mother-to-be (Susan Sarandon).
Lost and alone Giselle finds herself struggling to make sense of the urban sprawl of modern day Manhattan- a land where a "hi 'ho" means something quite different altogether.
She eventually meets world weary divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) whose kindness clearly extends to befriending deranged princess fantasists before taking them home for the night.
Though both are engaged to others, it is not long before the inevitable happens.
They sing.
The animation, both traditional and CGI is good without being breathtaking, most of the gags hit home and then there's the hummable tunes to round it all off nicely.
However it is the delightful performances, especially from Amy Adams and James Marsden (as the hapless Prince Charming) which provide the most fun.
Less subversive or original than Shrek , this is still great entertainment for the whole family.
