Deception
By Robbie Collin
DECEPTION is supposedly an erotic thriller. Well, I've had more erotic thrills descaling the kettle. And no, that ain't a metaphor.
Ewan McGregor stars as an accountant whose fast-living lawyer buddy (Hugh Jackman) introduces him to a sex club for New York's business elite.
All he has to do is ring a number and minutes later he'll be joined by a female Manhattan business hotshot in the mood for rumpo.
Ewan falls for one of the girls (Michelle Williams) and then the couple get embroiled in a bank heist with Jackman, which makes up the vast majority of the movie.
Deception is a non-stop laugh riot. Sadly for the film makers, it's not supposed to be.
Chuckleworthy moments range from Ewan's awful American accent (New York by way of Uxbridge)to the more subtle amusement of the sex club ending up so incidental to the plot that the three characters might as well have met at a whist drive.
It's very nearly Showgirls-bad—so ropey, it's almost worth going to see for amusement. Almost.
