Lee Mead - Lead Mead
Perhaps that's a little harsh on the 'Any Dream Will Do' winner as he can really belt out a tune.
Indeed he's got a decent voice and the track listing - including a surprisingly good slowed-down version of the Sugababe's 'Stronger' - does manage to showcase his entire range.
But the problem with much of the album is that it acts like a shop window for his next West End role, with some truly average show-style tracks sung in a hum-drum fashion.
And there's that version of David Essex's 'Gonna Make You A Star' to contend with.
An utterly desperate song sung in such a bland way through stage-school tonsels that it will have you wondering whether the artist has finally stumbled across the musical equivalent of 'beige.'
Similarly, Mead's 'Paint It Black' lacks the high-energy of his live and enthusiastic TV performance of the Rolling Stones classic, which went down so well with the voting public earlier this year.
But despite the lack of ambition and somewhat tinny production on this disk, I've no doubt it will certainly tick all the right boxes and really appeal for its intended audience.
And they will lap it up in their thousands.
It's just a shame that this bright young talent didn't dream a little bit further afield.
'Lead Mead' is released on November 19 and 'Gonna Make You A Star' is released on December 3.

Offensive? Report commentbeige, beige? Sorry you need to listen to it again. This time use a decent system. Did you not listen to 'When I need you the most' (written by Gary Barlow) an excellent new song or 'Make it with you' sensitive remake of a good song.

Offensive? Report commentAs many other professional reviewers have noted, this is anything but an album of show tunes. 'Any dream' is included as a bonus track but that is it. The quirky and self-deprecating David Essex number is a good upbeat intro to a varied selection of strong material mastered and mixed by the great Graham Stack. Who could fail to be impressed by covers of Paint it Black, revved up for a new generation and the ever lovely 'Make it with you'. With a live studio orchestra to give it intensity 'All that you know' got real emotional grip on this listener. You probably do need to be female to appreciate Gary Barlow's 'When I need you the Most' and there's nothing wrong with that, say I. The online trailers didn't do the album justice. Well done indeed Lee. audience.

Offensive? Report commentI have to wonder whether Simon Ward actually listened to the album as apart from ADWD (which we can all agree shouldn't have been included) there is nothing that sounds remotely "show tune" like. As for the "stage school" dig, 5 minutes on google would have shown him that Lee Mead didn't go to stage school. This debut album (recorded while Lee was performing 8 shows a week!) is full of classic pop tunes, both old and new, beautifully sung with meaning. Congratulations Lee, I can't wait fotr the next one.

Offensive? Report commentI agree with the reviewer this album is rubbish. Got it for the mrs as she quite likes him but even she didn't like it. That Gary Barlow one is pants as well. Bring back philip scofield! (and as to Vali's comment on paint it black revved up for a new generation, didn't rolling stones do a decent enough job with the original). Don't buy it people.

Offensive? Report commentAn album that will appeal to its intended audience. Hear Hear is all I can say to that.
It is very pleasing to be able to buy a pop album with clearly sung, meaningful lyrics.
The choice of songs is varied and excellent.
Lee Mead's voice is a joy to listen to.
Well done Mr Mead.

Offensive? Report commentBarryK, are you sure your wife is not listening to it in secret, not to upset you?
It is a lovely listen, good voice, good music and not at all musical theatre (except for bonus track, which I think should not have been included, but it is a bonus)
