My hell over sacking
NEVERMIND Countdown, Carol Volderman is an institution herself.
And the way her bosses have treated her is just plain insulting to both her and her army of fans.
You’d be hard pushed to find many people who haven’t - at sometime or another – watched Countdown.
Whether you watched in your student days, tuned in when you’ve been off poorly from work, switched on when you’ve been at home bringing your kids up, or made a date with the program while enjoying your retirement Countdown has been a stalward of day-time TV for longer than I’ve been alive.
And Carol has been a huge part of what makes it so special.
What do you reckon? Have your say here

if channel 4 gets some body else to do countdown hew will watch it after this, my wife and I will not,

I have watched Countdown from the very first show when channel 4 started. Admittedly I have not been able to watch every one. Carol and Richard were the icons of the show and when we lost Richard it was a tradgedy. Carol somehow made the brave decision to continue and kept the show going but we all know that it is not the same since the loss of Richard, but still enjoyable to watch. Carol and the guests made that work. I feel now that with Carol going as well, it probobly will be its downfall and the Final Countdown. Good luck Carol and thank you for 26 years of enjoyment.

I think it is time for Carol to move on.
A lot of viewers have become tired of the show and Carol in this role.
I think C4 have done her a favour.
Explore new boundaries Carol

I have not watched countdown as long as some of the other viewers, but i have watched it for a good few years. I do believe that without Carol there would be no countdown because she is the show and has been the making and backbone of the show since Richard Whiteley passed away. Unfortunately without her, the show will lose many viewers, including my family and i.

Over rated and vastly over paid. Even with a pay cut she would still get £2,000 a day. Good riddance and the quicker she goes the better

Totally disgraceful treatment of Carol. I first met Carol on Countdown back in the 80's and some 20 years later on another show, Grand Slam. She is a really genuine person and I'm sorry that the producers have treated her in such a shabby way.

I THINK THAT 18 GRAND A WEEK TO PRESENT A MUNDANE TV PROGRAMME PUT OUT AT A TIME WHEN MOST NORMAL PEOPLE ARE OUT EARNING A LIVING IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE AND 10 PER CENT OF THAT AMOUNT WOULD STILL BE TOO MUCH THESE SO CALLED CELEBRITIES DONT KNOW WHAT THE REAL WORLD CONSISTS OF AND EARNING SUCH RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF MONEY MAKES EVERY SINGLE PERSON PAY INFLATED PRICES FOR GOODS IN THE NAME OF AVVERTISING

Having been a member of the Countdown audience a few years ago, I remember Carol being a very pleasant and courteous lady. She patiently signed autographs and stood for photos and was very self-deprecating for a beautiful, talented woman. What the producers fail to understand is,she is Countdown!

countdown wont be the without carol i will never watch it again outrageous!

Hi Carol isnt it a shame when everything comes down to money and not ethics. When a loyal worker is asked to take a cut in wages as you have been asked to do,would the big wigs take such a cut in theirs---NO ---then why should you.I am a senior citizen and really enjoy joining in the show but when you and Des go --so do i,and i am sure i speak for many others.Good Luck in all you do and remember -tomorrow is another day, there are better things out there for you.x

They shouln't call it "Countdown" but the"Carol Volderman Show", she is the show and without her it simply doesn't exist.

Welcome to the real world Carol. Even after your pay cut how on earth could you cope on only £2000 a day.
Still you could always do more advertising for the loan companies, or any other thing that is waved in front of your nose. My heartfelt sympathies.

I am afraid what was a national institution
was demeaned when they appointed des o connor
as host being a senior citizen on the south coast i found same as myself after the icon richard whitely and the sauve des lynam departed
the standard of presenting the programme deteriated and i can see why veiwing figures went down i am afraid oconnor just was not up to the job so channel 4 have only themselves to blame so carol pays the price for their mistake

What are Channel 4 thinking of? Carol is Countdown. She has done a marvellous job for 26 years and I will really miss both her and Des, assuming I continue to watch the programme. Why is it off the air for the next month, anyway?

I stopped watching Countdown the day Richard died - he WAS Countdown!
Posted by: George Harris | Jul 27, 2008 3:07:45 PM
Good ridance. Countdown died the day Richard (the star of the show )died. I dont know anyone who actually watches it any more. As for Carol, it used to make me sick the way she constantly put Richard down and tried to make him look small. It was obvious she was jealous. He was a gentleman and didnt deserve her nasty comments. I for one wont miss that cackling that is so put on. Give Suzie Dent her job. Theres a real star !

Greedy bitch, good ridence to her I would do the job for £2000 per day.

Get over it Carol, 26 years is a long time to work for a private channel that relies on advert.
Are you expecting to stay another 26 years? I like you but it is time to move on and refresh your career.

im sorry i rarely watch countdown, only when i have a hangover really...
but carol is a legend, ok it isn't quite as good without richard whitely, but getting rid of carol will now make the programme redundunt and i think the show will go downhill and be phased out over the next few years.
cheers

Dear Carol
We are sorry to hear that you are leaving Countdown, but nobody in any sort of job - road sweeper to a football icon - would take a 90% drop in their salary.
Consider this; probably the channel want to put something else on instead of Countdown and this was their way of doing it so they don't lose face and you get the blame! Or, alternatively, they will try to run the show at a much reduced cost - and need we tell them, the viewing figures will plummet.
Some people on this site think that Carol is overpaid - all I need say against this is Jonathan Ross £18 million for three years; Graham Norton and so on...
All of your viewers wish you well, Carol and thank you for the good times we've had with you. We will miss you. xx Jill & Roger
