Sony rock 'n' roll . . and we like it

Day 2 in Barcelona and yet more announcements on how the future of mobile phones is shaping up. This is Agent Lee Williams here from The Geek Squad to bring you the latest.

Sony Ericsson: Walkman show off
First, Sony Ericsson is giving a great alternative to the iPhone with an updated Walkman phone; the W980. It looks great and has all the music function buttons on the front for easy access. Flip it open and there's even more musical know-how with all the menus you'll need to create playlists for your W980i_piano_black_front_closed_with favourite tracks. There's also the addictive Shake control which allows you to skip tracks with the flick of a wrist- literally. With 8GB of storage (that's space for upto 8,000 songs) there's plenty of space for your music and photos The W980 is also a 3G handset so you'll get super-fast web browsing and downloading.
And it doesn't stop there... You'll find a built-in FM radio and 'name that tune' function that can name any track you hear blaring out the radio at the gym. So keep your ear to the ground for a UK release date...expect early summer this year.
Toshiba dials in a new mobile
Next up, Toshiba has been hard at work designing the latest wacky handset: presenting the G450. We managed to get our hands on a sample here in Barcelona and it's certainly turning heads. The display might be a bit on the small side but the buttons are designed for easy Tosh texting on-the-go. It's also packed in a nice 160MB of memory for lots of music. Connect to your computer and you can simply drag and drop music onto the handset. 3G connective means you'll be doing everything at lightning speed too!
Samsung announces a wave of new handsets
Samsung has been making noise in Barcelona this year too, revealing a number of new not-too-expensive handsets. The fancy L310 with has a girly design and handy calorie counter built-in. Pick from a blingin' gold, chocolate brown or black design. Next up is the G400 which has not one but two touch screens. On the outside you've got your music function whilst the high-res inner screen displays 262,000 colours. That'll make for clear picture viewing!
Finally, I couldn't finish today's blog without mentioning one of the biggest unveilings today- from Google. There's been a lot of excitement recently that Google will be extending its grasp over the universe by taking a lunge at the mobile phone market. It all centres on 'Android' which is an operating system for handsets. It's designed to make using your phone much easier, which hopefully will do for phones what has been done with searching the web. Expect to see Android crashing its way into new handsets later this year.
More to follow tomorrow when the final announcements are made out here in Barcelona. Stay tuned!
